[opensuse-project] FOSDEM 2008
Hi We started last week the FOSDEM planing, so far we have some ideas about the talks and i try to get some money (i will keep you posted ...). We thought about topics which reflect successfull projects in openSUSE or areas where a lot of work going on right now. We just thought what would be interesting for the community. Everybody agreed that it would be nice to have more community talks, from the community, to the community ... here are some ideas: - Education - compiz fusion - openSUSE community (presentation of a local user group community member) - 1-Click - packman - the "other" site ... :-) (not limited to one site ...) - openSUSE board - KDE4 (maybe a combined talk with KDE members) - GNOME (for example accessibility) - php - openSUSE 11.0 - ATI driver - LTSP - product creator/KIWI - Laptop tracks This is not a schedule, nor is it fixed. Please add something if you have other ideas. We had this year 17 talks, should be in the same range ... If someone is interested to make a talk, this is the right thread for it. Booth: I guess it was quite good this year imho, i hope i can get again the large counters from Novell. True, but we'd really like to see more talks held by community members
(i.e. non Novell/SUSE employees).
Would be great to have feedback from the trenches, from people
contributing to user communities (e.g. forums, IRC, mailing-lists, ...),
especially the localized ones, to know what the issues are (lack of
information, collaboration, visibility ?) and how to address them.
For example, we could plan a one hour brainstorming/discussing session
if enough people from the community attend and get involved, to see
exactly what can be done to improve the situation.
And again, if enough people from the community attend, we could do a
similar session about translators: issues, how to improve, ideas, etc...
Apart from the openSUSE devroom, FOSDEM hosts an insane amount (over
200) of talks, and a great occasion to meet other community members and
people working for SUSE/Novell in real life, to discuss, at the stand or
around a beer^W^Wsome of the finest beers in the world ;)
So, if anyone has ideas, would like to contribute (taking part in such a
discussion session, make a presentation, spend some time at the stand to
show off openSUSE, the OBS, etc...), please make yourself heard.

Wish I could go. :-( I just looked at the FOSDEM website and see a schedule hasn't been posted yet, so I'm not sure if the issue of accessibility is being covered. Others may not consider it a big deal, but to me it is. I'd love to hear that a topic focusing on getting more developers tuned into the accessibility needs of disabled users/administrators was covered. I applaud those at Novell who have pushed the bar up in raising awareness and functionality for a11y users, and look forward to the day when such mentality is pervasive/integrated amongst all developers. With some of the testing and whatnot I have been doing with some of the folks from Novell, especially Hans who is doing a great job so far, I'm also looking forward to the day when we can say 11.x is the most accessible distro ever for people with disabilities. Pascal, I'm going to be there, I would be willing to talk about how the Bongo Project has benefited from the OBS or something along those lines if that would help. Bongo is thinking about requesting a Stand, just waiting to hear back from people as to their availability. I think it would be worth having a basic OBS introduction talk like last year, if it can be suitably promoted so people from other distributions realise it could be useful for them too, perhaps a suitably provocative title. Last year there wasn't a great attendance, but FOSDEM provides a unique opportunity to promote it to and get people on board from other distributions.

I think a generally more interactive format than last year might work better, if there are sufficient people attending. Perhaps half or two-thirds the talks, with more scheduled time for discussion.

I should be there, and am willing to do a talk if required, I think it's a bit early to decide what the best subject would be though.
