[opensuse-project] who makes unannounced repo structure changes?
a post from the forum http://forums.opensuse.org/english/news/announcements/441578-build-service-r... which announces to the unsuspecting: -------quote--------------- "User please be aware of changes to the URL structure for certain repositories in the Build Service, particularly KDE. Use the repository manager in Yast to remove the old one/s and add in the new address. If your repositories were added by a OneClick installer, you might find this procedure a little tricky. In which case, reply to this thread with ... -------end quote ---------- and i wonder if anyone on this oS-project ML knows who is changing the structure of the repos with no pre-warning to the world wide user base nor instructions on how to solve the problems the changes causes to YaST, YOU or zypper?? or maybe i missed both...i only checked the Weekly News and front pages of opensuse-community.org, opensuse.org and googled for repo change in the last week at both.. where should i have looked? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Sorry, but you don't have to believe everything what people write in the wiki. There is absolutely no reason to panic, the old repo URLs still work. Not 100% true. The modified repos were handled correctly, but its dependent ones weren't. If someone had KDE:KDE4:Community and KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop now he doesn't needs to worry about KKFD, but the KKC URL changed from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.2... to http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.2... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Just though about it now. I didn't though it could be solved in a generic way (my home:RedDwarf:KDE suffers from the same problem, I don't expect a fix). But it seems the "important" repos aren't so much: from "KDE:*" it seems the they were/are KDE:KDE4:Community and KDE:KDE4:Playground. But I'm not sure if any of them has already a rename plan. Also, I said "openSUSE_11.2_KDE_KDE4_Factory_Desktop" from memory. Grepping my /var/cache/zypp dir it seems the old URLs instead used "openSUSE_11.2_KDE4_Factory_Desktop", sorry. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Can I suggest 2 things: 1) a policy of redirecting the old URL to the new for at least 6 months after change 2a) the development of a modules in the core zypper system which will flag up when a build system's repo's URL changes. This shouldn't be too difficult to automate. Or 2b) add the check of old repo URLs into the zypper refresh code, and generate a warning if they are. is this something that is, will be or should be incorporated into the code base.. or, is each user in the openSUSE Universe supposed to hand wire this? (if my questions seem to indicate i don't understand the instructions/ or information on the cited mac-vicar page, that would be correct) DenverD -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

It just means that if someone maintains a file with a content like this: <repoindex> <repo url="http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.2..." alias="Factory's KDE"/> </repoindex> User don't need to add the *repository* KDE:KDE4:Community. They instead add the *service* <name_it_as_you_want>, the repo will be added automatically. And if the repo ever changes the service just needs to be updated to <repoindex> <repo url="http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.2..." alias="Factory's KDE"/> </repoindex> The repo will be changed automatically for all users that use the service. It can be also used to create a service "Latest stable KDE". Now users of this service would have the KDE:Distro:Factory repository. But if KDE:Distro:Factory tomorrow adds a beta of KDE 4.5 (and a KDE:44 repository is created) users would have its repositories automatically changed... so they don't end with a beta of KDE 4.5 thet didn't want. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
