Hi,
(found on #opensuse.ru IRC channel)
For some reason download.o.o redirects users with Russian IPs to to
ftp.twaren.net, which is in Taiwan. Please fix it.
There is nothing to fix, if the Taiwanese mirror is reasonably closer
than, lets say, a mirror in North America. Russian IP addresses get
redirected to Asian mirrors if possible (if possible even to Russian
mirrors but that is not always possible). If you tell me that you have
much better access to, lets say, North American mirrors than to
Taiwanese or other Asian mirrors, please let me know (write to ftpadmin
at suse dot de) and I might be able to rethink the mirror selection
scheme and make it deal better with your situation.
This is some kind of input that we depend on that we can get only from
local people.
By the way, this mirror is badly broken - many
directories and files
are missing.
What do you mean by "missing"?
Could you give a specific example? It is hard to fix something when you
only know that "some files out of 500.000" are missing, and you don't
know where to start looking.
Don't expect a mirror to be complete. Especially for the /repository
tree, you should always access it via
download.opensuse.org/repositories.
If a mirror "breaks" (which can always happen in various different
ways), it'll either be disabled a few minutes later, if it doesn't
reply, or if it looses files (like in accidental removal), it'll be
noticed by the *complete* scan done every 24 hours, and in some other
cases we (and the mirror admin himself also) depend on input like yours.
In general, please contact ftpadmin at suse dot de if you observe
irregularities. There shouldn't be anything wrong with
ftp.twaren.net at
this time.
If you still see problems with this particular mirror, or any other
mirror, could you please let me know? If yes, I'll dig into it further.
AND, finally, the very best you can do is:
Ask the yast team, libzypp team, distribution managers to implement
http://en.opensuse.org/Libzypp/Failover because it would fix ALL those
problems you are seeing resp. you have been seeing reported on the
#opensuse.ru channel.
Thanks,
Peter
