[opensuse-project] A few questions about You, OSC & contributions - ty if you do a reply
1-2-3 : Facts, ideas, actions ... 1. Facts = last week some of us did a small brainstorming about openSUSE marketing (animated by Izabel and Kosta, about 10 of us including Richard & Bruno) 2. Ideas = I'm sure that You have all creativ answers for the future, each of you have a point of vue 3. Actions = when I asked Izabel "who is the marketing team ? She answered me :-)) : YOU, US, ME so I try an exploration : if you can take 4 minutes (ok perhaps 6) to send me your point of vue, it would be a starting point for a marketing "guideline" (Izabel said strategy, but it seems that strategy is not a right word for staying free to ...) Suggestion : you can answer as you wish (on the list or just to me), I'll wait around 14 days to send a feed back ... or nothing if no answer lol) Questions (simple & fast, not quick & dirty) : 1. did you go to OSC12-13-14 ? => Option : why 2. When yes, where you volonteers, talkers ? did you ask for tsp ? 3. Will you go to osc15 ? => when no, why => when perhaps : what makes your decision ? 4. Have you any ideas on how to increase ppl at OSC ? (hoe to be VISIBLE, how to be more attractive .. héhé) 5. What kinda talks would interest you (did interest you), yes YOU ? (examples) 6. Have you any idea of WHO could be a great keynote speaker for next year (and it would be better for openSUSE TSP when living in Europe ) 7. Would you have time to contribuate more ? => when yes, what do you need to do it ? 8. Last & option : for you, what is the best way to increase openSUSE contributors ? 9. free and open others ideas ? I am actually very new to OpenSUSE, and I had wanted to go to OSC14. I had actually prepared two talks, one being on how we are using opensuse for our tribal administration, but I am unemployed, and I did not hear back on funding in time, so I was unable to make any arrangements. I concede I was a very last minute pick after the original deadline was already extended, so it was simply a matter of unfortunate timing and limited resources, rather than any explicit action or issue in the process itself.
3. Will you go to osc15 ? => when no, why => when perhaps : what makes your decision ?
We are doing some interesting things with opensuse, and I would be happy to talk about them then. This time I would make sure to be well aware in advance of any deadline. But unless I do find some work by then, funding would be the primary issue effecting me.
4. Have you any ideas on how to increase ppl at OSC ? (hoe to be VISIBLE, how to be more attractive .. héhé)
One thing that made the first fedora (flock) stand out was 3d printing and the presentation from Lulzbot. Maybe finding someone using OpenSUSE in a similarly exciting area to present would help.
5. What kinda talks would interest you (did interest you), yes YOU ? (examples)
Secure VoIP services and protecting personal privacy, cryptography, and things in this area generally interest me. As I did a lot of arm work historically, a presentation on using/porting OpenSUSE to Raspberry PI, would interest me a lot too. If there isn't, I might choose to do such a presentation on opensuse rpi by osc15 :).
6. Have you any idea of WHO could be a great keynote speaker for next year (and it would be better for openSUSE TSP when living in Europe )
7. Would you have time to contribuate more ?
At the moment I am mostly interested in contributing packages that we are upstream for and use, and which are not in opensuse presently...
8. Last & option : for you, what is the best way to increase openSUSE contributors ?
I think the current opensuse wiki is laid out confusing and hard to search through. Often you end up finding pages that are about much older releases, although newer info is also there, just harder to find. I think making things more discoverable would help a lot, at least for me, though maybe there is a simple project roadmap page out there somewhere that I have missed.
9. free and open others ideas ?
Thanks tc Françoise

Questions (simple & fast, not quick & dirty) :
1. did you go to OSC12-13-14 ?
no went to osc11 (Nurenberg)
=> Option : why
family problems, a bit far and expensive for 2014
2. When yes, where you volonteers, talkers ? did you ask for tsp ?
volunteer and partially refunded http://dodin.info/piwigo/index.php?/search/269
3. Will you go to osc15 ?
I for a moment hoped to be able to organize it :-) - but couldn't find enough manpower. I will know when I know where. Would love to :-)
=> when no, why
=> when perhaps : what makes your decision ?
date, distance, price, family constraints I was hoping to go to Thessalonic, but was prevented from this at last time :-(
4. Have you any ideas on how to increase ppl at OSC ? (hoe to be VISIBLE, how to be more attractive .. héhé)
make something for mates. Tourism, perhaps. make it before or after an other great show, make it during holidays :-(
5. What kinda talks would interest you (did interest you), yes YOU ? (examples)
I woulds like to attend all of them. Have to duplicate myself :-)
6. Have you any idea of WHO could be a great keynote speaker for next year (and it would be better for openSUSE TSP when living in Europe )
I don't think this can be done like that. One year before is a long time. Linus would be fine :-)
7. Would you have time to contribuate more ?
alas not, I already contribute too much (as seen by my relatives)
8. Last & option : for you, what is the best way to increase openSUSE contributors ?
great and enless question... I think isolating distros one from teh others is a dead road. No. Expense, distance, time. I don't see my going as crucial for me or the project as to justify the above.
3. Will you go to osc15 ?
=> when no, why
No. Expense, distance, time. I don't see my going as crucial, not even important, for me or the project as to justify the above. Maybe, just maybe, if it happened on my country, I would try to go. If it happens at a city I happen to have to travel for other reasons, chances increase, obviously. Like Madrid. As I do not have any compelling reason for the event to be hosted on Madrid, I do not propose it. Do it wherever best for the majority of people in the project. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. 1. did you go to OSC12-13-14 ?
=> Option : why
No. I went to osc11 (NUE) and osc12 (prag), I did NOT go to osc13 and osc14.
2. When yes, where you volonteers, talkers ?
I did Talks.
did you ask for tsp ?
No.
3. Will you go to osc15 ?
=> when no, why
Unclear / undecided.
=> when perhaps : what makes your decision ?
"Need to be there" vs costs. costs would be: Time, Money, Travel Fatigue. My "need" is giving talks/lectures/workshops mostly.
4. Have you any ideas on how to increase ppl at OSC ? (hoe to be VISIBLE, how to be more attractive .. héhé)
Bring it again closer to SUSE engineering sites. Nuernberg or Prag, so that SUSE employees can visit without or with low costs. This will increase attendance to a larger piece of the community (ones paid by SUSE).
5. What kinda talks would interest you (did interest you), yes YOU ? (examples)
Hmm. Not much, I am mostly on the talk holding site.
6. Have you any idea of WHO could be a great keynote speaker for next year (and it would be better for openSUSE TSP when living in Europe )
I don't care about keynotes and I do not see their point.
7. Would you have time to contribuate more ? => when yes, what do you need to do it ?
Depends on if there is a topic need (for me: Security, Maintenance) to be there.
8. Last & option : for you, what is the best way to increase openSUSE contributors ?
I do not know.

Google says, for me: 2,066 km 18 h 6 min This route has tolls. This route crosses through France. And that is non-stop driving. Yes, central may be, but nevertheless, too far for me, and expensive. Wherever it is done, it will be too far for many people, so don't bother with my grumblings ;-) (irrelevant trivia: walking distance is shorter, 1,934 km :-p google maps is interesting. But it refuses to calculate a train route. Flight time, 8:45, with two intermediate stops) - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. There is one thing I am wondering: - Can we currently even fill a conference with useful topics (that would attract people)? With WINE we had yearly Wine Conferences, 2 days (saturday+sunday)... After several years we ran out of topics to fill two days, and it turned into 4-5 talks, and a bit of workshop style work, and lots of socializing. (Wineconf attendees were usually 25 - 30) Wineconf was in the last two years part of FOSDEM in Bruessel, and while it lacked the exclusive concentrated work of earlier ones a bit, it reduced the amount of organization effort. Wine is probably a bit smaller than openSUSE, but what about joining FOSDEM as a DevRoom (again) instead the full blown conference. Yes, I have my doubts about that too. what about OSC every two years and the other year local (national?) one day meetings? could be good to make local groups better - for example we have little way to meet eachother in France. 1. did you go to OSC12-13-14 ?
=> Option : why
I went to OSC12, not 13, not 14 Why: because of the distance/travel money involved and also time constraints
2. When yes, where you volonteers, talkers ?
oSC12: I helped with video a bit and had an unconference like session.
did you ask for tsp ?
oSC12: yes oSC13: no oSC14: no
The financial option question would more be like : would your boss/your enterprise agree to "offer you such a conference" (plane, hotel + days off ...) ? When yes or maybe, what would be the conditions ? (decision criteria) the + for the enterprise ?
The company would likely sponsor some time but no travel. oSC visitors are no customer target base for the company so talks about the project would bring no real benefit and me just visiting the conference is also of limited benefit.
3. Will you go to osc15 ?
=> when no, why
I'd like to go and the distance is not _that_ bad there.
=> when perhaps : what makes your decision ?
travel costs and timeframe
4. Have you any ideas on how to increase ppl at OSC ? (hoe to be VISIBLE, how to be more attractive .. héhé)
sorry, no idea. But as other's said if it's closer to Nuremberg or another big SUSE location you probably get some more from them.

I was at OSC11 and OSC12, not at OSC13/14 I usually go only to conferences where I hold talks; last year and this year I had no good ideas for talks. Apart from that, the timing was not optimal for me, but that would have been doable anyway. Additionally, both OSC11 and even more OSC12 were "just around the corner" for me, meaning less travel overhead.
2. When yes, where you volonteers, talkers ? did you ask for tsp ?
Talker, no TSP (my employer is paying for conferences etc).

If oSC is held at a location conveniently reachable from almost all parts of the world, and is reasonably cheap, there will definately be more people. In fact, more people will find it easier to ask for sponsorship, and TSP will be able to sponsor more people. If I might add, some more visibility to TSP will help

Universities can be a good place to start. Getting students and professors to use openSUSE, and then slowly getting them interested in contributing to it. Initiatives like GSoC, GCI and possibly our own Season of openSUSE can help in this regard

4. Have you any ideas on how to increase ppl at OSC ? (hoe to be VISIBLE, how to be more attractive .. héhé)
Sure I have ideas (they are cheap, and sometimes easy to build) :-) The first question should be What as community do we want as conference. Will be it for ourselves + outsider related to our project or more widely open? What kind of talks/workshop and especially what ambiance we want to run it. (It look like that the formal way of conference didn't work anymore for us) So we can be creative for ourselves like getting more workshop, hackfest day etc in an openminded space, with lot of people connecting together which at the end of osc are proud about the "shit done" (TM Henne)
5. What kinda talks would interest you (did interest you), yes YOU ? (examples)
Schedule one or two "problem", we (globally) have with a nice action plan. Then run it together.

Whoever could talk about our relationship with our great/big sponsors SUSE/B1/AMD etc...

=> when yes, what do you need to do it ? Ok take me two lecture to get it, the yes is about more contributing right ? Then co-working with people that knows, is always a big plus, cause you learn quicker, get answer directly, and you feel support. So the first hard step are more easy.
8. Last & option : for you, what is the best way to increase openSUSE contributors ? I would say that if we find a way to cleanup a bit the mess of informations we have, and make it useful & pleasant to use, I guess it will be more easy to drive people to the jewels the openSUSE's project hide.
Then our moto "it's on the wiki" will help people discovering our project in place of making it a pain is A...
9. free and open others ideas ?
No for the moment, but more will come for sure ;-)
Thanks tc Françoise

1. Facts = last week some of us did a small brainstorming about openSUSE marketing (animated by Izabel and Kosta, about 10 of us including Richard & Bruno)
2. Ideas = I'm sure that You have all creativ answers for the future, each of you have a point of vue
I've been thinking about this on and off - in my experience, conferences tend to be about what people do, not the tools they use to do it. The tools could be a sub-topic of course, but the conference is about what they do with them. That's at least partially why the oSC isn't of a lot of interest to me - openSUSE is only a tool, it's not what I do, I "just" work with it. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (8.2°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org
Hi, Nearly 2 weeks has gone, and so I just want to thank the ppl who did answer to the questions (and +10 for making me laught). The best way to evoluate in any system, starts by replacing a few «!» by some «?», and take the time to explore the ideas. You can read answers in the attached pdf, with a few words about OSC and WIKI. nice regards Françoise JP attached : pdf
