[opensuse-project] Alternative strategy proposal: openSUSE - the Linux distribution platform
After reading the strategy thread I thought it would be best to come up with an alternative strategy proposal, as this better expresses what I would like to see for openSUSE in the future than discussing all the details of the other proposals. It's somehow based on the other proposals, but tries to be not as limited. It's also not meant to introduce any brand new ideas, but more build on top of what already is there in the community. So here you go: = openSUSE, the Linux distribution platform == Goals The goal of openSUSE as a project is to provide a platform for distributing Linux and software running on Linux to a wide range of users. This platform consists of tools for creating software distributions, the openSUSE distribution as base and reference implementation, and the community supporting the tools and the distribution. On top of the platform the openSUSE universe consists of more specific distributions, which make use of openSUSE infrastructure and technology. Examples are SLES, MeeGo, openSUSE Education, KDE and GNOME live systems, and could also be for example developer or cloud oriented distributions and more. So openSUSE provides a way for subteams to address specific user groups and needs. openSUSE also provides means to distribute software independent of the environment of the user to spread Linux based software and make software easily available for use in the openSUSE distribution and systems based on it. The openSUSE distribution acts as a reference distribution, providing a testbed for the used technology, a stabilizing ground for common components, and a real-life use case for applying technology and distributing Linux software. It's targeted at technically interested users, including programmers and system administrators. It has a focus on good user experience and making technology available to end users. It doesn't target users with highly specific technical needs. == Activities === Essentials * Provide stable set of core packages distributions can build on * Broad hardware support * Provide tools for package and distribution building * Provide common building blocks for distribution, e.g. installer, configuration tool, maintenance tools * Provide home for overall community and specific teams, e.g. bug tracker, Wiki, mailing lists, collaboration tools * Create the official openSUSE distribution as reference implementation * Enable, support, and collaborate with specific teams to create their own distributions * Enable and support, and collaborate with upstream developers to build and distribute their software on openSUSE === Good to have * Provide wide variety of packages for further use * Community for user support * Work on standards which make it easier to mix components, e.g. free desktop standards * Collaboration with other distribution platforms === No focus * Directly providing a polished distribution for non-technical end users * Bleeding edge technology -- Cornelius Schumacher <cschum@suse.de> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I see no problems in that. I have to say, I really like Cornelius calling it a "reference distribution". As I said in my other mail, I don't think it's so close to the Derivatives, that it can be merged there. Especially the name itself I think has a very different focus, so I'll put it on an extra Wiki page. -- Cornelius Schumacher <cschum@suse.de> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I see a LOT of similarities with the Derivatives strategy. Are you sure this couldn't have waited until Thursday when you'd have produced a list of comments to that strategy? I see a LOT of similarities with the Derivatives strategy.
Me too :-) And I believe that any strategy will fail unless it has at its core to make openSUSE an attractive main OS in itself. People will tend to choose their own preferred distro for their derivatives and their contributions. So the strategy should be to make people use openSUSE as their preferred OS - then the other things would follow "automatically". -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I never realized that's how "Fedora Studio" and "Federa Build Service" came to be. Oh wait........., there is no "Fedora Studio" nor "Federa Build Service" despite it having lots of people for which it is the preferred distro. Maybe Fedora needs a better strategy if they are going to be more than a throw-away distro. (Which is at least my opinion of it, but maybe they have a Fedora Universe that adds value I don't know about.) Fedora Build Service exists - in a way -, it's called koji, but of course looks pretty F specific. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Fedora have other tools for building packages and making respins. And lots of Fedora respins exist - despite their tools being inferior. Same can be said for Ubuntu. Which only supports my point. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Exactly. And openSUSE currently already provides an infrastructure with the Build Service and Studio which makes it very easy to create derivatives. So why adopt a strategy which focuses on one single aspect (which is already a strength) at the expense of others (in this case a focus end-users)? -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Hi, I'm going to get away from this mailing list very soon. Too much pollution for nothing. If you are so worried what people want ask them! Shut down everything and put up vote what do you want. They'll tell you what they miss very loudy. If mission not become number one GNU/Linux distro on earth i'm starting to use Ubuntu or Fedora on our servers and development enviroment. Don't mind developers they come when we have enough users. Money will follow. Problem is why people use other distro than openSUSE not why openSUSE exists. openSUSE is not for developers like open source and free software ain't for developers. They are for users (that is what everyone tends to forget). I JUST ASK How much more documentation have other distros? MSDN in documention way got it very right. That should be the goal of documentation. what you don't find there it doesn't exists. Tuukka ps. Please form another mailing list for discussion like this. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I guess I don't see as much similarities with the Derivatives as you do ;-) It's not completely different, that's right, but it's also not completely different to the other strategies. I couldn't think of a way to express what I wanted to say as comments to the Derivatives strategy (and it probably would have been a lot more text), so I decided to not wait, but sent it as an alternative proposal. -- Cornelius Schumacher <cschum@suse.de> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Agreed, but I started with SuSE almost 10 years ago because of the distribution. Today I'm still here because of the openSUSE universe. The distribution per se I suspect I could replace with Fedora and not feel like I 'd lost anything. But I'd lose the rest of the universe and I'd miss that.
