[opensuse-project] In search for a new mailing list admin
Hey, for the last 15 years or so I have been the admin of the openSUSE mailing list server taking care of the technical and social aspects of it. That means handling the postfix MTA, the MLM (mlmmj) and the web archive (mhonarc + swish-e + apache). The social aspects means support for using the service (using the ml, creating new lists etc.) and handling conflicts among users (enforcing rules, trolls etc.). In the light of the recent developments around this service I would like to find a replacement for this responsibility as soon as possible. Sadly this task is only doable by SUSE employees because of the server location :-/ If that is not a problem for you and if you are interested to learn more about this very important openSUSE service, please contact me. Henne, thanks a lot for your work all those years, highly appreciated! Regarding the ml admin, we can split the work into two parts, the social and the technical part. So a "social ml admin" can be pretty much everyone, without even any technical background. Regarding the "technical ml admin", I had a discussion about it today with my team, and it seems the need to be a SUSE employee is not needed any more. There are plenty of parts that are public, there are parts that can become public, and there are parts that will need to remain private. Thus, if a non-SUSE employee wants to help on this, is more than welcome and we'll be willing to collaborate to make more parts of this service public. Theo

If you mean that 'socal ml admin' exclusively means telling people to follow the rules, sure this can be done by anyone. I don't really care how we classify the things that need to be done as long as someone does them.

It seems your team doesn't really know what's going on. And that's okay, you haven't been involved :-) Next to nothing can be done without access to the server. No MTA/MLM logs can be read to investigate problems, you can't unsubscribe people, create new lists, change list options, start/stop services etc. But if your team wants to take over and organize this differently and change this, be my guest. Do you want to? Access to the lists.o.o server can be given to a non-SUSE employee as soon as we put a rule in the proxy, which we're willing to do. What we can't give is access to the SUSE MX server, but even there some configs are in git and we're willing to open more.
But if your team wants to take over and organize this differently and change this, be my guest. Do you want to?
Sure, I'm willing to help on the technical part but I don't want to be alone there, I'd appreciate if somebody from the community would step up to help as well :) I'm not interested on the social part though Theo

Awesome, please do so :-) When is this going to happen?

There are already 2 other persons interested. Joel and Chuck. Henne -- Henne Vogelsang http://www.opensuse.org Everybody has a plan, until they get hit. - Mike Tyson -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

Done, ping me on IRC to give you instructions on how to access it please.

This is great! Please point them to the heroes mailing list and the
#opensuse-admin channel to introduce themselves as well :)

I'd be happy to help out with the technical side too, although I think I would feel more comfortable if I knew Henne's reasons for stepping down. /Per -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org
