Hi,
- How can we come up with a model that provides a more sustainable
organizational effort?
i) The place - I am attending oSC since 2012. Looking at the trend,oSC12 probably had highest number of attendees. But yes we co hosted oSC12 like this year. Number matters! I am still giving maximum ++ to oSC12 because the location. I believe It was easy to access to most attendees being a capital city & relatively big city compare to host cities for oSC13,14 & 15 respectively. It is obvious that, bigger cities [population wise] always has large audience & contributors in general. During oSC12 I met several openSUSE contributors who traveled thousands of miles to attend oSC12 from outside & within Europe. Same experience continued for oSC13.
ii) Technical/Audio~Video setup - Places like Universities already has 50~60% technical setup ready & we don't have to spend that much time & energy on setting things up. I was lucky enough to attend 'Video streaming and recording via Open-source software' session by Martin Caj & continued by Juergen Weigert to get detailed information.
- What would it take to raise oSC attendance closer to the top of your
list, given the other reasons listed above plus your own are still present?
i) Length of conference - Yes we talk/complain about less audience on 4th i.e. last day of the conference. :-) feasibility check = Shall we go with/try out 2 or 3 days conference structure instead of 4 day structure? I am comparing openSUSE Asia 2 day summit last year + count of attendees against recent oSC's.

I won't argue any of the other stuff, just comment on the questions you posed.
- Should the effort be made to continue oSC past oSC16?
- Consider that no proposals were received for the call for location of oSC16
- Everyone that says "yes we should", be prepared to help
I believe there is value to the conference, but there are changes that could be attempted. It obviously comes down to getting people to help probably more than anything else because if it continues to burn people out ... it will just die out.

I don't know how possible it is, but maybe attempting an online conference would be a start. I know we use BigBlueButton on our campus for some "largish" online learning, so maybe something like that would be possible. It would be a way to eliminate some of the travel issues that people (like myself) have.

- Do we need a rock star act for the party?
- More beer, less beer, .....?
- What prevents people from contributing to the organization of oSC?
For me, the last two are tied together. It is entirely the location which is tied to expense. My travel budget is very limited, but my work schedule is really flexible. I would volunteer if I can travel there.
This is a very valuable discussion to be having. Thanks for splitting it off!
