[opensuse-project] openSUSE again at Google Summer of Code?
I just saw some comments that a new Google Summer of Code'2009 (http://code.google.com/soc) will be accepting project proposals in a week or so. I consider last year's participation great and would like to get your feedback for this year: * Shall we participate again? * Already anybody volunteering as tutor? * Who will organise GSOC for openSUSE? Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Director Platform / openSUSE, aj@suse.de SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126
Is there any reason not to participate? Lack of tutors? I'm not qualified as a tutor for a programmer, but can you explain what the organising implies? I have several ideas for projects: - Yast module for a DLNA server and media server solution - Automatic package approval and management system for a rolling release version of openSUSE. A system that puts voted packages in to a "rolling repository". (No not Factory :-) ) Then the not so adventorus can subscribe to this repository and get fairly new SW without waiting for the next distro release. cu 2009/2/27 Andreas Jaeger <aj@suse.de>:

Vincent already described what it needs. The first thing we have to do is to apply as mentoring organization. This involves writing the application and come up with an initial list of project ideas and mentors.

That sounds like an interesting project. Probably could be implemented as part of the build service or even as an independent tool making use of the API of the build service. Could you enter the project ideas into the ideas list on http://en.opensuse.org/Summer_of_Code_2009 ? -- Cornelius Schumacher <cschum@suse.de> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Ok, I have added the idea to the list. Can you me the mentor for it? I'll do whatever I can to clarify the idea and assist, but programming vise I'm not qualified. http://en.opensuse.org/Summer_of_Code_2009#Automatic_package_approval_and_ma... Thanks for adding. I think we don't necessarily need a concrete mentor right now. We can still find one, when proposals for the project come in. -- Cornelius Schumacher <cschum@suse.de> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Once we decide on participation, we should create a wiki page to point people to for further information. A couple of weeks ago, a student came into one of our IRC channels asking around expressing his wishes to participate in GSOC. I was a little lost to not be able to point him to a page where he could follow a procedure for whom to ask for more information, apply, etc. Best I could do was to tell him to sign up for the -project mailing list and make his request there, which isn't always the best solution. -- Bryen Yunashko openSUSE Board Member openSUSE-GNOME Team Member GNOME-A11y Team Member -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

We have the wiki page now at http://en.opensuse.org/Summer_of_Code_2009. It would be good to add some more details there, what getting in contact with the community means and what the main contact points are. -- Cornelius Schumacher <cschum@suse.de> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Yes :-)
* Already anybody volunteering as tutor?
I would think this won't be that much of an issue?
* Who will organise GSOC for openSUSE?
Some more details on what "organazing" implies: + fill the application form for the project. It's not really a long task, but well, it has to be done :-) + find potential mentors and have them all register on the GSoC website + push the community to propose project ideas, and triage them for the potential GSoC participants + review GSoC applications and help create consensus on which students get selected + during GSoC, be available to help mentors and/or students; make sure there's good communication going on, and also try to push the students to advertize their work. + make sure all mentors fill the review forms. + monitor the GSoC mailing list to generally do the right thing :-) I can help people a bit with this if needed. From the FAQ (http://code.google.com/opensource/gsoc/2009/faqs.html): "Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a global program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source projects." It's global. It's not tied to a location. The idea is that students work at their university and the mentor is somewhere remote. Last year openSUSE mentors came from countries including India, Germany and US - and the students from different countries as well. Sascha, does that answer your question?
