Hello
Sorry for this late mail. I have mailed Manu Gupta and have been waiting for his reply. I finally found this mailing list and thought i could get some response here.
I am Bhargav, a Computer Science undergraduate student from BITS-Pilani, India. I am an avid mobile app developer. I worked on Phonegap apps during GSoC 2012 with Apache Software Foundation and have developed many Windows Phone apps. I am also well versed with native android app development. I have developed an Android app[1] for Exotel Techcom Pvt. Ltd. and it is being used by its clientele of over 2000 firms. My github account[2] will provide much more details about my developer expertise.
In my search to find an organization that has challenging problem statements in Mobile application areas, I found openSUSE and was very much interested in the openSUSE news/planet Android application project. While I was trying to come up with a feasible solution and plan to write a good proposal, I got a few questions.
1. Why was a native android app considered? I know that Native apps are faster than Phonegap apps. But, phonegap provides us the ability of releasing multiple platforms at once. I am well versed with both native and Phonegap app development. Answering this question will help me in coming to a consensus regarding app's design. I am really not worried about phonegap vs android sdk. One interesting point of concern I had can phonegap support multipl e languages, which I think should be necessary as planet.oo is written in many languages
2. By "notifying users of new articles", do you mean the actual notifications on Android/iPhone? Again this can be a configurable option, and the features are upto you to decide, one basic requirement that I have is that the rss feeds should be propoerly parsed and the complete article should be displayed on the app itself. 3. By openSuse news, do you mean the news on http://planet.opensuse.org/ ?
Well news.oo , planet.oo, connect feeds, twitter feeds, facebook posts, Idea, event calendar etc. These are just examples, you can set your own data sources, news.oo and planet.oo are a must.
I would be very much obliged if I am provided with answers to these questions and whatever questions that may arise in future as they will help me in writing a good proposal and in turn get chosen to openSUSE.
