Note, those .27-longterm kernel releases will be much more infrequent than I was doing (if that could be possible), so anyone wishing to run an "enterprise" distro on .27 will have to be responsible for keeping up with the security issues on their own as they will end up being more frequent than the .27-longterm releases will be.

I didn't realize SLES made major kernel version updates like that.
This was one of the first times in a long time it did (we did it a long time ago in 2.4 days as well.)
Am I right in understanding Redhat keeps the same basic kernel for the full LTS period? (ie. Aren't they planning to support 2.6.18 in Redhat 5 for a few more years?)
I don't know, why not ask them?
Timely security updates for the LTS kernel seems critical to me. (ie. If I don't need security updates, I can just leave any old openSUSE release in place for years.)
Is any LTS distro supporting 2.6.27 (opensuse 11.1) or 2.6.31 (opensuse 11.2) for the long-term?
Not that I know of. All of the major "enterprise" distros agreed to pick the .32 kernel to base their products on, and did so (RHEL6, SLE11SP1, Debian, Ubuntu LTS, Oracle Unbreakable Linux, etc.) to try to reduce the ammount of churn and support they had to individually do, and instead, place it all on me :) thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

That's exactly what I thought. ie. Only an occasional kernel was designated for long-term enterprise distro support. I just did not realize that would likely only be for one release every several years. Based on the above, it seems to me, one way or another opensuse 11.x LTS needs to be based on 2.6.32. As an example I would guess a lot of EXT4 patches will get back-ported to 2.6.32, not to older kernels. My vote would be to hold-off a few months on a LTS effort and take 11.2 instead. (It's EOL this spring. It's the first of the openSUSE releases to only have 18-months support.) Then upgrade the 11.2 LTS kernel from 2.6.31 to 2.6.32 fairly early in the LTS process. Good Luck LTS team. I hope that's more than just Wolfgang. (My hope in this thread was just to clarify the long term kernel support status and that seems to have been accomplished. If the opensuse LTS kernel is indeed 2.6.32, I'd be interested in helping get that kernel out the door since the back-ported patches will be mostly tested by the community, but I can't see me investing the significant effort needed to support 2.6.27 because that will involve some serious testing of back-ported patches.) There is a lot of discussion going on about details and while that is not that bad it's too early to discuss them still. But yes, if SLE11 was able to go to 2.6.32 I hope we can do the same for "openSUSE 11.1". But then again the kernel and other very low level stuff is my main concern where we could fail. Unless someone knowing that stuff steps up to help. Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

my ISP make me run with 2.6.34.6 (I can also have older kerlnel if necessary) kernels are available here (I don't know if this ftp is public) ftp://ftp.ovh.net/made-in-ovh/bzImage/ I posted a question to my isp's devs on the forum http://forum.kimsufi.com/showthread.php?p=72057#post72057 jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
