[opensuse-project] GsoC Midterm Consolidated Report - Separating libYUI

Hi, I would like to summarize my progress so far. I am working on the libyui project as mentioned above. WORK DONE -------------------- 1. libyui and all three UI plugins (Qt, ncurses and GTK) have been ported to target systems (Fedora and Ubuntu). 2. The git repository at gitorious.org/libyui/libyui has been removed. The master branches of libyui and the plugins have been ported to gitorious from the YaST svn and can be found at : gitorious.org/libyui/libyui-master.git gitorious.org/libyui/ncurses-master.git gitorious.org/libyui/gtk-master.git gitorious.org/libyui/qt-master.git 3. Builds now make use of OBS. The download repository can be found at : http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/nbprashanth/ . Currently build targets are Ubuntu (10.10 & 11.04), Fedora (14 & 15) and Debian 6. 4. GTK plugin no longer has libzypp as a dependency and can hence be ported. 5. Due to CMake issues on Ubuntu 11.04 with the GTK CMake module (Bug report : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cmake/+bug/751940 ), builds using CMake have failed. Moreover, the default install location for gdk-pixbuf on F14 and F15 are different which caused the GTK plugin build to fail on F14 as well. 6. I have converted the GTK plugin to use autotools as opposed to CMake. This has made it compile successfully in Ubuntu 11.04 and Fedora 14. 7. Documentation for libyui is now online and can be found at :http://doc.opensuse.org/projects/libyui/HEAD/ . This is an initial version and improvements may be expected in near future. The absolute path issue is now fixed. 8. Examples, update for YUI and full GsoC reports are also updated on my blog which can be found at : http://nbprashanth.wordpress.com/ . My GsoC reports can be found on the blog as well as the yast ML. 9. Patches for minor bugs such as "long long warnings" have been made. Not integrated upstream yet. 10. A sourceforge page has been created for libyui. It includes a bug tracker, forum and a mailing list. The version control system still continues to be git at gitorious.org/libyui. The sourceforge page can be found at sourceforge.net/projects/libyui/. 11. If anyone happens to test any of the YUI packages at OBS and finds a bug, please file a bug report at sourceforge. 12. The documentation lacks a main page/introduction. This has been fixed and will be updated in the upcoming week. WORK LEFT ------------------- 1. Documentation needs to be refined and improved. 2. libyui lacks a webpage at sourceforge. This webpage should give basic information as well as a few tutorials on libyui. Screenshots and links to external resources would also be found there. 3. A few small examples using libyui need to be put up. 4. [opensuse-project] [GSoC] Porting Wubi to OpenSUSE [midterm report]

Hi, here's a small summary of the 6th (coding) week. Unfortunately I had to spent more time with university stuff than I expected - that's why I didn't finish the complete todo for this week. I did some code restructuring and started to work on the class for the source route. TODO: - rewrite the project and package working copy classes: * the new working copy format will be incompatible with the current format. * the basic layout will look like this: prj | ---> .osc/ (stores prj _and_ pkg metadata) | ---> pkg1 | ---> <files> ... | ---> pkgN | ---> <files> So all metadata is stored in the prj/.osc dir instead of prj/pkg/.osc The advantage is that we can support a complete package "restore" (without the need to download the package again): cd prj; rm -r pkg; osc revert/restore pkg; (that's possible because the metadata is stored in the prj/.osc dir). * to convert old project/package working copies to the new format the "osc repairwc" command can be used (at least that's the plan) Feedback is always welcome. Hi, here's a small summary of the 7th (coding) week. This week I spent most my time with the project and package classes which manage osc's working copies. I got a little behind in this thread, and will try to catch up now. There is no intent to "fool" the users. If I did not think that MS6 were fully qualified to be called a "beta", then I would not have proposed this. In fact, if it is not, then openSUSE is doomed. A reputation for releasing buggy code is impossible to shake. The scheme proposed by M. Raiko is not that different from what happens in the kernel. Anything not available by the end of the merge period has to wait for the next cycle. If openSUSE used that scheme and froze features/versions after MS2, a lot fewer bugs would make it to GM. I'm not sure that I want to go that far as we would be shipping some really old stuff. Perhaps the rolling releases of Tumbleweed will help debug many of the updates that will be in our next release. Hi everyone, My weekly report can be found at [0] and in plain text below. This week has mainly focused on implementing TODO lists which is nearing completion. There isn't a huge amount to write about this week so the report is fairly short. -- Report Text Below -- This week I've been focused on adding TODO list functionality to Entomologist. I haven't quite finished the implementation but it is nearing basic completion. Once I've finished the UI/core functionality I will then work on adding cloud connection features so that the lists can be synced with various calendar services/WebDAV servers. My plan for next week is to: - Finish up the UI/core functionality. - Start the cloud integration once this is wholly complete. By this time next week I'll hopefully have much more to show off to coincide with the Midterm point :). [opensuse-project] Request to change MS6 to Beta

This is a request for changing the name of the MS6 release to Beta. The Testing Core Team (TCT) discussed the general problem of testing of new releases. With openQA, the probability that Factory iso's will boot and install is greatly increased; however, with the current system, many users do not start testing until RC1 is ready. As a result, there is very little time for detecting and fixing the bugs that will only be seen with a workload that is diverse. Such early testing will be particularly important for 12.1. Not only have we regularized the release schedule and naming scheme and need to follow through with a high-quality product, but we are behind due to the early build problems. The TCT considered several possible changes to entice earlier and broader testing. The schedule does not have much flexibility to increase the time between the RC1 and GM releases, thus we probably need to indulge in some 'social engineering' to get earlier testing. We could change from 6 Milestone and 2 RC releases to 5 and 3, respectively, without tampering with the total time. Alternatively, we could rename from MS6 to Beta. The TCT favors the latter option. It might mislead the users/testers a little regarding the quality of the offering, but we don't think calling MS6 "Beta" is misleading. By most definitions, Beta means feature-complete and free of huge bugs - we should be able to get that with MS6. A beta release should attract more users. In addition, many of us start full-time usage with MS5 or MS6, thus we know it to be usable for many people.
