Hi
For some reason I cannot connect to http://forums.opensuse.org/ and I
get a Database error message.
Anyone with an idea?
Thanks

Dear all,
Given the recent events, I decided to compile a small list of
questions/topics to present to the contestants to the Board.
1. "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you
gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." - F. Nietzsche
Given the discussion regarding the recent action of the current
board in expelling a member, could you please comment the quotation
above having in mind that action (and your knowledge about the
situation)?
2. "Resentment seems to have been given us by nature for a defense,
and for a defense only! It is the safeguard of justice and the
security of innocence." - Adam Smith
Whats your interpretation of the quote from Adam Smith.
3. Do you consider yourself a 'forgiving' oriented person? Please
justify. In case you have restrictions to 'forgiving' could please
identify them? Elaborate please.
4. "In general, the Internet was not designed to accommodate
deliberate failures to communicate." - Daniel J. Bernstein
Could you please give us your interpretation of the previous quotation ?
5. "All governments should be pressured to correct their abuses of
human rights." - Richard M. Stallman
Should only 'governaments' be pressured to correct abuses on
Human Rights? What's your stand regarding Human Rights? Should an
organization like openSUSE subscribe the Universal Declaration of the
Human Rights? Should be Board be also the safekeeper and Guardion of
such? (consider that the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights
also contemplates the right to 'defense').
7. "Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to
make mistakes." - Mahatma Gandhi
Could you please comment the quotation above and relate it to
your future position on the Board? Please elaborate.
6. If you take decisions on the Board on behalf of the community and
the people that voted on you, do you believe that you should inform
those people on controversial disputes about your standing? Where is
the line between your own personal standing and the will of those who
elected you?
Thank you,
Nelson.

I would like to know the opinion of the candidates about the recent
action of the board presently discussed on this list.
if you had been in the board, would you have supported this action or
not and why?
thanks

Hi guys,
before that whole discussions manages to get even more pointless can we please
simply agree that:
1. The poll is open until the end (naturally)
2. Every voter has the right & option to change his / her votes until the poll
is closed.
This way it is fair - IMHO - and the whole pointless argumentation is void.
<snip countless reasons why this is fair just to spare you the spam />
regards,
Stephan

Though this is by far more interesting for Network Operators, openSUSE
enables IPv6. I don't have any knowledge about IPv6 implementation on
openSUSE infra-structure, but wouldn't this be interesting to
participate and promote ourselfs in an audience that might be
interesting?
Just a thought.

As a openSUSE member and assuming I have the privilege:
I make a motion that the openSUSE bylaws be updated to allow for
formal member petitioning. And if a formal petition supported by 10
members is submitted to the board, the board must call for a all
members vote on the matter addressed in the petition. If the matter
concerns an improper sanction or appeal of a sanction, then the
sanctioned person must be one of the petitioners.
=== details
I serve on a board. There are 2 aspects of that board that seem
relevant to the current sanction discussion:
1) A sanctioned / fined person can request a hearing where they can
interact with the board. But only once. We don't do it often and
prefer to setup meetings specifically to address the hearing, not
handle it as part of out monthly meetings. This could clearly be done
via IRC for openSUSE.
I gather the disbarred person was given the opportunity to make
his/her case to the board via emails, so I think this is equivalent,
but a more formal IRC meeting would be even better.
2) A petition signed by 10 of the members can be brought to the board
and it must be voted on by the whole! ie. if 10 members disagree with
a board action (or lack of action) they can file a petition with the
board and the board must call a full all member vote on the issue.
Obviously this makes the issue semi-public as all members have to be
informed of the issues at hand.
I don't recall this type of feature being in the openSUSE rules.
In this case, if the disbarred person feels wronged and is willing to
have the issue addressed with all openSUSE members included in the
communication, then he/she would simply need to get 9 other members to
join him/her in petitioning for an open hearing / all members vote.

Then perhaps we do need greater clarity around what matters should be
handled privately, with the assumption that everything else is public (or,
at the least, freely available to anyone interested).

I admit it's a bit more complicated than what I wrote, yes :D
The usual community process is probably something like - there is a team
responsible for some area and if they have made a decision a statement could
be made. IF such a statement is made depends on them thinking about that or
not...
So in this case, if the people in the openFATE entry decide this is something
that has to be done and some are willing to work on it, I guess it might make
sense to get out a statement like Greg wrote.

The openSUSE board election just started! Please go to:
https://connect.opensuse.org/pg/polls/read/digitaltomm/10769/opensuse-board…
and cast your vote for this election. All openSUSE members[1] are eligible to vote.
The board consists of 6 members and one chairperson.
As the election period of Pascal Bleser and Henne Vogelsang ends,
this election will appoint 2 new board members.
The election period ends at January the 26th.
All candidates have put their agenda on the wiki[2], linked as "Platform" after the candidates' name.
If you have any questions, please contact the election officials (election-officials(a)opensuse.org).
