Hi,
please let me introduce myself. My name is Rupert, I'm 28 and I'm
currently on the home stretch of studying business administration and
electrical engineering at Darmstadt University of Technology.
I've been involved with the openSUSE Project for several years. I
served as the Project Manager of the openSUSE Forums Merge, I
initiated the openSUSE Forums section at the openSUSE Weekly
Newsletter and I contributed as a moderator at the openSUSE Forums to
the openSUSE community. I was employed twice at Novell/SUSE - as an
Intern in Product Management in 2007/2008 and as a Workstudent for
Community Architecture in 2008/2009.
As of the 1st of October 2009, I'm sponsored by open-slx.com to work
for the openSUSE Project as openSUSE Community Assistant. I'm really
looking forward to collaborate with several openSUSE teams on
improving openSUSE documentation and community resources - namely the
openSUSE wiki, the openSUSE Forums, the SDB and other support
information for openSUSE.
My current focus is to work on a concept for the openSUSE wiki to
improve the content quality, to enhance its usability and to improve
its maintainability.
Have a lot of fun!
Rupert

Today, I realized that the words "openSUSE 11.2" has disappeared from
the countdown images.
e.c.: http://counter.opensuse.org/11.2/small.en.png
Just for confirmation. Is this the intentional modification, or a sign
of some trouble ?
I myself like the previous counter with "openSUSE 11.2" and background
better than current one. ;-)
Best,

Kopete is nice. But Google Talk configuration should not have to be
this annoying.
To get Google Talk to work, you have to add "Jabber" in your accounts
list, change the default port to 443, turn on SSL, set the default
server to talk.google.com, and then plug in your name and password.
Wouldn't it just be easier to have a "Google Talk" option that
pre-sets this stuff? An end-user would probably just give up or try to
use Pidgin or Empathy.

Hi,
It'd be nice to have some openSUSE presence there! If you're interested
but you have no idea what kind of topic to propose, we can certainly
help you find something interesting to share during the summit :-)
Cheers,
Vincent

About the Distro Summit
=======================
The Distro Summit 2010 is a one-day developer conference with a strong focus on
collaboration between free software distributions hosted at the linux.conf.au
2010 (http://www.lca2010.org.nz). In addition to a schedule of technical,
social and policy talks, the Distro Summit provides an opportunity for
developers, contributors and other interested people to meet in person and work
together more closely.
Previous similar events have featured speakers from around the world. They have
also been extremely beneficial for developing key free software software
components and for improving collaboration and sharing between the different
distributions.
Target Audience
===============
The Distro Summit is (mainly) a technical event, but this does not mean that
the only target audience are developers and maintainers of free software
distributions: the event will feature talks that range from the development to
real-world use cases, going through marketing and the social aspects of the
maintenance of free software distributions.

Hi all,
Apologies - the project meeting is tomorrow, October 7th, not 10th as

Ok. I'm just going to get this out of the way now that I have
installed Milestone 8.
http://blogs.zdnet.com/perlow/?p=11243
I am sick, utterly sick and tired of having to install the SAMBA
packages and then punch a hole through the firewall with the Samba
Server config tool in YAST2 just to make smbclient and network
browsing on the desktop function. openSUSE has been doing this as
default behavior for the last several releases.
Yes, I know how to fix it. All of us who are power users know how to
fix it. But your average end-user has no clue on how to fix this. Many
of them will simply say, "Crap, I can't get my network functioning.
Maybe Ubuntu wont be broken"
Ubuntu, who is openSUSE's prime competition, has functioning SMB
networking by default.
http://blogs.zdnet.com/perlow/?p=11218
Can we please, please, pretty please, make SAMBA installed by default
with the appropriate firewall rules applied as default behavior?
One thing we might want to consider for future openSUSE releases is
something like that "Role-based" configuration GUI that Windows Server
2008 R2 has, that automatically configures a set of services based on
the way the system is going to be used.
http://content.zdnet.com/2347-17924_22-293601-293615.html?seq=12
This could also be done during installation, where the installer
would give a choice of "Workstation / Developer Workstation / File
Server / Web Server" and the choice would apply the right set of
packages and firewall settings. By default, all of the Live CD
versions should have SMB networking out of the box functioning.
