(I just downloaded beta3 and then 10 minutes later I see beta4 announced!) Anyway, it seems that sound is still broken on an iMac G5 for the beta3 release. The install goes through easily enough, but I learnt from last time that I needed to deselect sound in the hardware config towards the end so I tried that again. This time the machine locks up when I try to deselect sound so I'm stuck. If I leave sound enabled the machine will be useless after the install and when I try to disable sound the machine locks up! (It locks up when I select the drop down list box (in the hardware configuration screen) intending to deselect sound) I think I read on the linux ppc64 list that sound on G5 might be fixed recently so maybe a newer kernel for the install disks might do the trick? regards, Chris

What do you mean with useless, just no sound? There will be a 2.6.16-rc4 which has a few audio fixes: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/ppc/HEAD/ pick the kernel-ppc64.ppc.rpm
No. When I said the machine will be useless I meant it will lock up eventually, because the sound on G5 iMac is fundamentally broken, it's not specifically a Suse problem. The machine is only usable if there is a way to disable sound and with these beta discs can't disable sound before the machine locks! On 18 Feb 2006, at 22:48, Olaf Hering wrote:

After the inital reboot, append a 's' as a kernel cmdline option to boot into single user mode. Then just disable the network driver, something like: echo install soundcore /bin/true > /etc/modprobe.d/zzz No idea if the first or last match wins.
