I have a powermac 5500 (built in monitor) on which I have been unable to install either NetBSD (needs another old powermac to zterm commands in through the printer port) or Yellow Dog Linux (get a blank screen when trying to install, no-one seems to know why).
My questions is this, will I have similar problems with Suse PPC? I see it is "supported" but that's what those other two OS's said too.
Does anyone have Suse 7.2 (7.3?) running on a 5500 and if so were there any special install requirements ?

What problem do you have? It is supposed to work, but it might be possible that support for that model is gone.
Get BootX from http://master.penguinppc.org/~benh/ or use the one from the ydl CDs. Get a kernel, that one is supposed to work: ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/deflt/miboot.initrd.image
There is a known bug when you boot with "No video driver" and kernel 2.4.12.
You can also try 2.4.2 or 2.2 Kernels from ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/ Get vmlinux.gz and a ramdisk.image.gz and put it in the "Linux Kernels" folder.
