Hi all!
I'm running a Suse PPC Linux Server on a G3 Server Machine.
Since RAM is cheap, I though on Upgrading the 256 MB Memory to 1 GB. So I bought 3 256 MB DIMM Blocks and stick them into the Server.
To my first surprise not all RAM was discovered or shown with "free".
Actually I have 4 DIMMs in the Server
2 x 128 MB 2 x 256 MB
= 768 MB
"free" shows this:
free -t total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 578784 558088 20696 113680 444824 59536 -/+ buffers/cache: 53728 525056 Swap: 262136 916 261220 Total: 840920 559004 281916
Any suggestions? Trick?
Suse Version is PPC 7.0
Greetings,
Olivier --

You should install a 2.4 kernel. It has highmem enabled and it should allow you to use more than 512mb.

Hi Olaf,
Thanks for your response.
One more Question then: Can i change the kernel to 2.4 without the need to Upgrade the OS? Actually Suse PPC 7.0.
Which Kernel is the best for my G3 Server Machine?
Greetings..
Olivier

You need a newer ppp.rpm and a newer modutils.rpm. Both can be found on the FTP Server. ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/

The latest ;) Try the 2.4.12, it works ok so far. 2.4.16 might run a bit better but its not very well tested.

Hi all,
[I just installed Suse Linux 7.3 PCC on my PowerBook Pismo. First impression: Whau! It seemed to recognize all my hardware (sound, Ethernet etc) and I was up and running in no time. Better than 7.1. Haven't played much with it yet, but I guess airport and modem work just like in 7.1. This is unlike YDL2.1 that has a lovely and simple installer, but failed to recognize my modem, AirPort and sound-card - and did funny thing with the keyboard-layout. Great work, Olaf & Co.!]
Anyway... here's my problem and question:
On my hard disk i have Linux, MacOS9.x and MacOSX. I let the installer setup LILO with Linux as default, and after the installation and reboot I can chose between Linux and MacOS (space). But... after booting in MacOS9.x I changed the setup in MacOS "startup disk", asking it to start OSX (and not OS9), and now I can only boot in MacOS9 or MacOSX. LILO has diapered, and Mac's "Starup disk" can only "see" OS9 and X.
Question:
- What?s wrong? - Could I have placed /boot a wrong place? (is it still a problem on new hardware such as a Pismo?) - Is it possible to have LILO do triple-boot; choose between Linux, OS9.x and OSX? - Is it possible without placing OS9.x and OSX on each their partition?
(... The index in the manual don?t say anything about OSX.)
