Just some word to complete the diagnostic. When you get some network problem like transfert very slow (some kb/s on 100M lan) and when you run the command ifconfig and you get packet collision, you surely have a duplex problem. To solve that, you can change it on the switch (if this option is available on it). On the linux box, you can force duplex with mii-tool if your network card is mii compilant. On non mii compilant card, you'll have to give options to modules load. Check modinfo (name of the module) or google for modules options.
