[opensuse-ppc] PPC DVD request (12.1 unstable)
Dear all, I'm wondering if would be an option to create DVD 12.1 unstable for PPC, when openSuSE 12.1 is released. As there is officially no up to date openSuSE PPC release anymore. Then newbie PPC users will be able to install it on their old mac. I will try, this weekend, that's no problem. The main reason why I ask for a freeze (12.1 unstable) is that we'll have a frozen release. If you have an ongoing factory release you'll have a broken release sometimes. Is it an option to also freeze the PPC release on version 12.1 i.e. to also have a openSUSE:12.1 release. The last version was 11.1. It might be that I'm overlooking something? Is there any objection to create a 12.1 unstable? An other option is also to create a openSUSE-12.1-NET-ppc.iso that uses the 12.1 repository in stead of a DVD.

Part of the problem with the PPC port is that it was dropped unexpectedly AFTER 11.2 was released. No one really communicated it with the community that something like that was going to happen. If it had been known, more PPC users might have been able to step up to test.
Is it an option to also freeze the PPC release on version 12.1 i.e. to also have a openSUSE:12.1 release. The last version was 11.1.
Freezing it isn't the answer. We need to test, test, test it to see if it actually works.

We probably could try to do a snapshot of factory and split it out and see what the stability factor is. The odds of it being ready by the time 12.1 is released is low because, again, lack of testing. However, I would go with doing a split out when 12.1 is released and calling it an "unofficial" snapshot for testing to see what we can find. At least we would have a similar case to 12.1 to work with. I have a iBook 366SE here that I could test on. I don't have access to any faster PPC hardware at the moment tho. However, it's only got 320MB RAM, and I don't have the extra $$ to upgrade it now, so I'm limited in what I can do myself for a few more weeks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+owner@opensuse.org

That's a good idea. As we need something that is stable enough to use by PowerPC users.

I've downloaded this image (build0002) and will try on my old iMac next week. I knew the directory was still there but didn't realise it was being updated.

I doubt it gets as far as booting...
Is this basically 12.1 built for PPC? If so, I assume we will clone to the 'unstable' image once we have one that installs and runs on a few machines. -- Cheers Richard (MQ) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+owner@opensuse.org

It is the current factory state as far as it builds, so yes. Factory is leaving 12.1 already behind, so it might even be a bit newer. Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+owner@opensuse.org

I don't get it recognised as a bootable medium in my old iMac - is it me and my set-up or the image file? FWIW: my normal method is holding ALT pressed after the boot chime, icons come up for anything in the system that is bootable. The HD has OSL 11.1 and OSX, those are shown but not the CD. Ejecting (with key E) and replacing with an 11.1 CD results in the latter being shown. I've tried 2 CD-Rs burnt on different machines as well as a CD-RW (which the iMac CD drive seems not to like). There is no MD5 given, but I get d7187471a3fceb49b1a12625c04266fb - can anyone confirm this? There's a good chance it's just broken atm. You could try to go to an OF prompt and manually load yaboot off the CD. Alex

This image also doesn't give me a bootable CD on the iMac - either via OF or as described above. If I boot OSL 11.1 the CD is visible when in the drive, and looks sensible, but when I boot OS-X (10.3) the CD label is shown as FIX_ME* though again the contents are visible. Examining the iMac bootability of this image is beyond me but maybe someone on this list can advise? I've got openSuSE Factory PPC running on my PowerMac. I already installed openSuSE PPC 11.1 before, so I already had all partions etc setup. The DVD can be downloaded here. http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1/iso/ After I used the hd install method as mentioned in the Link. Everything is OK, except video. It's now only using fb device. I've compiled the nouveau driver. It seems some people at Ubuntu are using it even tough the PPC version isn't supported. How are all other people getting along installing opensuse PPC Factory/12.1.

Everything is OK, except video. It's now only using fb device. I've compiled the nouveau driver. It seems some people at Ubuntu are using it even tough the PPC version isn't supported.
How are all other people getting along installing opensuse PPC Factory/12.1.
Still can't get the iMac to boot either NET build 0002 or 0004, will try 0006 when I get a chance. It boots an (old) 11.1 NET CD. -- Cheers Richard (MQ) Linux user # 439271 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+owner@opensuse.org

Nope, Build0006 is just the same. No joy either with the boot menu (ALT at start-up) or the OF prompt. For the record: I get md5sum 3c90b3ef0be8ec497f5ccc9602549612 openSUSE-NET-ppc-Build0006-Media.iso -- Cheers Richard (MQ) Linux user # 439271 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+owner@opensuse.org

Of course, because nobody is fixing it. Please try to find out why it doesn't work - the fact that it's broken won't change otherwise :) Alex

Well, yes - this seems to be the case. However, I am not a (very good) programmer, and neither am I very familiar with the details of the boot process - especially in the Mac environment. I'm keen to see openSuSE PPC and pleased to help with testing but I simply don't have the understanding to do much to fix this. I'm hoping that someone on this list has. Yes, I can google, and have been doing so when I can find the time, but I've not found much to help. Any pointers gratefully received. -- Cheers Richard (MQ) Linux user # 439271 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+owner@opensuse.org

Is it an option to use the hd boot option, for now until the CD is fixed, according to the link that Alexander gave? http://mac.linux.be/content/booting-open-firmware

I tried this on build 0004 but with no luck. I'll try to have another look with 0006. Acc. section 1 of this web site, all we need is the rather obtuse (to me) boot cd:,\\:tbxi - this gave me an error (I failed to note the detail). I also tried an external usb CD/DVD drive but with no better luck. -- Cheers Richard (MQ) Linux user # 439271 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-ppc+owner@opensuse.org
