You may also want to verify that you are using the most up to date firmware
release (SF235_180). Believe it or not, this often helps!

You can provide following arguments to have your network configuration
already done:
insmod=e1000 hostip=192.168.1.10 netmask=255.255.255.0 ..
in this case there will be no DHCP request.
You will find SP2 for download links at:

Will do. However, keep in mind that I am using Old World machines, and
some of the problems could be caused by the buggy Open Firmware of
these machines. There are some patches over at NetBSD for them, but I
am still working through their info.

I had actually been trying to get a copy of v7.3 when I found out that
v10 was going to reintroduce for desktop PPC(they've had it in their
SLES insetad). It's definately a huge improvement over Yellow Dog(and
considering I don't care for Red Hat/Fedora).....

Ok, I tried to install v10.0 Release on my Beige G3/266. Using the
Apple 24x CD-ROM, I was able to start the installation, and even
partition the drives with no problems, but after installing about a
dozen packages, I started getting errors, and then no matter what I did
no more packages would install. I tried a second time and had the same
problem. I replaced the Apple CD drive with an AOpen 52x burner and
tried again. I was able to completely install with no problems now.
However, I did notice some things:
1. In YaST, when you go into the CD-ROM config, it shows the CD drives
twice. I saw the same thing on my 9600.
2. I cannot use the CD-Burner as a user. I was able to use the burner
as root. I had a similar problem on the 9600, but I don't think I
tried it as root.
3. When I configured a USB mouse which was plugged in after the system
was up, YaST launched SaX2. When I saved, it asked to test the config.
When I restarted X, the screen was messed up. However, I don't know
if this is a monitor problem or not because I had to adjust the monitor
itself to get the size right on the initial config and this time.
My Beige G3 has the onboard ATI Rage II w/ 6MB SGRAM. The MacOS drive
is IDE on bus 0 and the burner is hdc on bus 1. The hard drive I used
is on an Adaptec SCSI card.
v10.1 Alpha 3 would not work on either my 9600/300 or my Beige G3. It
would not work with either the ATI video or my IXM Twin Turbo. It
locks up before it starts the installer. I couldn't get any further no
matter what I tried.... :(.
I still have not gotten my 9600 to fully take v10.0 Release yet. I am
still having the problems with the MD5 errors. This affects the base X
package as well as the KDE base package, so I am unable to get any kind
of graphical desktop. The only thing I can think is that there is a
problem with the CD-Drives, so my next step is to try copying the files
to a hard drive and installing from there.....
Thanx for any help....

Hi all,
I would like to announce the foundation of an association in Debrecen,
Hungary, which has the goal to promote commercial Un*x versions and open
source Un*x-like operating systems and their development environments in
the hungarian higher education.
We have a collection of older computers such as IBM RS/6000 7025 F50,
IBM AS/400 9406 Model 600, IBM AS/400 9402 Model 400, HP9000, Digital
Alpha and some SUN machines. We do continue the purchase of discontinued
stuff as our budget lets it do and permanently looking for non-x86
architecture computers (PPC, Alpha, MIPS etc.).
For the moment we have the support of the local university and most of
our members are students who wants more than C#.NET and Delphi.
Our other goal is to give some support to open source projects such as
developpment for Linux PPC and testing pre-release (Betas and release
candidates) versions.
Our beginning projects are a kernelspace cluster implementation study on
a BSD version (preferably on OpenBSD 3.8) and AS/400 RPG400
self-instruction group.
We are currently negotiating the integration of our activity into the
university's educational program. Just to note: until now there was no
possibility to study this kind of operating systems here. And this is
only a beginning of the cooperation.
If you have some idea how to make our initiative more interesting for
students don't hesitate to contact me.

Andras Csepinszky aka vakvarju

Hi,
sorry for the first but empty mail. I'll try to do better now.
I'm running OpenSuse on my iBook now for a few weeks. Most things are working fine.
But there is one thing I have no idea how to get it to work.
The VGA-Port for external displays seems to "dead". For presentations it would be
nice to connect the iBook to a Beamer (like on OS X).
But how? Using SAX I can't find the right switches to turn it on. Does anybody know
how to do it.
By the way, I noticed this because it was not possible to get a fully functional X export
onto the iBook under MacOSX 10.4.x. So I tried OpenSuse which worked fine but lacks
on the support of external displays.
Does anybody know the solution? It would be a great help for me.
Thanks, and a nice weekend.

Thanks for the info guys
However I tried typing "install console=hvsi0"
The install continues as normal, but once again when yast is started the
screen goes blank and I am unable to continue with the install.
Is the best solution to install SLES 9 sp2, if so do you know the URL for
the download?
Thanks
Martin

Martin...
There are HVSI bugs in SLES9 GA. These should disappear in SP1.
Following are the workarounds for a fresh install (without using SP1);
please do a fresh install rather than an "upgrade".
A)
1. At the yaboot "boot:" prompt, type "install console=hvsi0".
2. If output ceases shortly after hitting enter, you probably have the
wrong
serial port, so use "console=hvsi1" instead.
B)
1. You *must* configure a network interface with a static IP address
during
installation.
2. After install, the system will boot all the way up but will not display
a
login prompt. (The natural reaction is to press enter a few times;
unfortunately
this can cause a kernel panic.) At this point, use ssh to log in to the
system
over the network.
3. In /etc/inittab, remove the line that begins with "hvsi0". Replace it
with
this line:
hvsi:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 9600 hvsi0 vt102
4. Run "telinit q". The login prompt will now appear on the serial port."

[suse-ppc] Problems loading suse
onto ibm p710
Hi
I am trying to install suse enterprise linux power on an ibm p710. This
server does not have a graphics card, I am using an IBM 3153 terminal set
to emulate a vt100
I can boot to the sms menu and then select the cd device to boot from.
I then get the boot prompt and type install. The server loads the kernel
from the cd into ram and then states that it is starting yast. At this
point the screen goes blank.
I cannot therefore continue the install; I thought the server might be
trying to output yast as an x windows application instead of ncurses.
I therefore tried to install using the following string to enable
connection to eth0 using VNC. install vnc=1 vnc_password=abc.
The screen then prompts me to select eth0 or eth1. I select eth0 and the
kernel panics with the following error
kernel panic: hvsi_recv_control: service processor closed HVSI connection
Any help is much appreciated
Thanks
Martin

Hoping that will be introduced in SuSE now. It is already in the kernel
of the next Ubuntu Dapper realese.

This may not be an SuSE question per say, but does anyone know if Linux
will run on one of the PC Compatibility cards for the PowerMacs like
the Orange Micro? I realize that these cards were desgined for
WinDoZe, but it should be possible to run linux on it. The question
is: Has anyone tried? Thanx
