[opensuse-packaging] Bruno -- FGLRX Patches?

Bruno, Hey, you don't know me but I'm working with a team of people to get fglrx working/patched across several distros. We have heard that you have this building with modern kernels and Xorg versions, particularly Crimson, and could use some help analyzing the patches you are using to get it to work. We have some work done on a set of patches of our but think we can save a great deal of time and troubleshooting by reaching out to whoever is writing the patches for fglrx in OpenSUSE based on its success. I could take the patches apart and go line by line but this will take much longer without someone explaining which parts are SUSE-specific or which parts fix what problems-- we're not sure if you're the right guy to reach out to, but I see you are listed as the package mantainer -- if you could please point me to the author of the patches used for that package I'd greatly appreciate it. We are looking for a recent Crimson/fglrx, recent kernel, recent xorg combination or any information/pitfalls or patch breakdown we can get our hands on. We have spent quite a bit of time trying to track down the right people for the SUSE packages on IRC to not much avail and I literally have a team of about 8 people doing almost nothing but wait for your reply to this email lol -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+owner@opensuse.org

I believe that your hopes are too high. From what I remember of the last version available, the fglrx module build on 4.4 kernel, but doesn't work with any newer Xorg version.

Google fglrx+opensuse -> lizards articles -> reference to author of patch and make script (Sebastian) + builder and hosting (Mysefl) : I didn't receive any news from Sebastian since christmas, perhaps he's giving up on this subject. Which I can undertand after numerous years. The right attitude, even if hard to achieve, would be to contact directly amd (they have some forums too) to propose your help there, to maintain and patch upstream this driver. This is how Sebastian has done his contribution. After 6 years of building and hosting it, I'm asking myself why I would continue : fglrx is broken. -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member, fsfe fellowship GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+owner@opensuse.org

I appreciate you getting back to me on this and this should give me most of what I need. Won't take up too much of your time here-- Re: Credit: They haven't started any work on it yet and I'm still securing buy-in, may not need to if all goes well, but I'll make sure everyone who participates gets credit. The Elusive Sebastian: I have seen Sebastian's site and I unfortunately do not speak German well enough to understand it :) I have seen his IRC user pop in and out and I'll keep an eye out for him in case he is willing to provide his commendable insights on this, it looks like he's done some really impressive work. raw-src: I'll dig through the source, and delegate what I can't figure out if everybody's still willing to tackle it knowing we're kind of on our own. If not, I'll pick at it until I buy a different brand :) Re: Xorg version: My last understanding is that it was working on 1.17 for a while, but not 1.18, I am seeing reports from bluehatrecord that they've got a patch that should enable 1.18 but I believe this was after his card died and I do not believe he has a way to test, so it could be rumour (yeah the information saturation is that bad with this driver). I am glad to hear it's on a 4.4 kernel as this will make the decision to use it more sane once the other issues are resolved. Re: AMD Contact: What channels besides their forums are you using for official AMD contact re: fglrx? I know there are some that some of the distro package maintainers for different distros reach out to but have never been aware of the process there. Don't count on him on irc too much last time was Sat Feb 07 17:34:49 GMT 2015
But his mail contact is available in the makerpm script ;-)
raw-src: I'll dig through the source, and delegate what I can't figure out if everybody's still willing to tackle it knowing we're kind of on our own. If not, I'll pick at it until I buy a different brand :)
I've been interested in fglrx, because on my card HD5750 long time ago on one of my computer. The other's one run different well known brand. Actually I've no dedicated budget to replace it by a newer AMD gpu. If you read the pre-announce of AMD everything below r9 will goes legacy (like few years ago everything under HD5xx). Which mean no hope to get fglrx working for them and only free radeon will be available. This can lead to two things : place most of your efforts on bug reporting against radeon (which has improved a lot). Fglrx will perhaps be rewritte to support exclusively newer chip. But I'm not in direct relation with AMD. So this is just a rough guess.
Re: Xorg version: My last understanding is that it was working on 1.17 for a while, but not 1.18, I am seeing reports from bluehatrecord that they've got a patch that should enable 1.18 but I believe this was after his card died and I do not believe he has a way to test, so it could be rumour (yeah the information saturation is that bad with this driver). I am glad to hear it's on a 4.4 kernel as this will make the decision to use it more sane once the other issues are resolved. If you have a patch that should work for 1.18, it should be easy to test. Btw in the meantime the kernel 4.5 is hitting the street :-)
Re: AMD Contact: What channels besides their forums are you using for official AMD contact re: fglrx? I know there are some that some of the distro package maintainers for different distros reach out to but have never been aware of the process there. Why not starting here http://www.amd.com/en-us/who-we-are/contact
And as you said, ping other distro maintainers : see inside the .run

ps : could you force yourself to send only a copy to the mailing list. I don't need another copy :-) -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member, fsfe fellowship GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+owner@opensuse.org

Chris, I don't know which Bruno you meant to send this to, but you did send it to a mailing list that supports packaging. Good luck on finding the Bruno your looking for, but there's a good chance he's not subscribed here. Greg On Sat, Mar 5, 2016 at 11:53 PM, Chris Punches <punches.chris@gmail.com> wrote:
