I don't agree. In practice it's still too much hassle to "maintain" packages from the outside. I mean it's true that anyone can maintain packages in the buildservice or elsewhere but the way back into the openSUSE distribution is not defined sufficiently IMHO. Correct. I have 1777 packages installed on my currect workstation. Let it be 500 packages that I really use. So according to you, my obligation would be to contribute to all of that packages? If I find a bug, I should not report it but fix *any* bug I find. In YaST? In vim, in Mozilla, in Openoffice, in Latex, in Mplayer? Of course, sometimes I do, if if the developer is busy, the bug affects my work heavy or some other reason. But it's not my job, it's voluntary. If my bug doesn't get fixed, it's my bad luck. Same here: If nobody of the build service developer like the idea, and nobody doesn't implement it, it's my problem. I didn't say that anybody should/must implement it in spare time. What is the prefered way to apply for package maintainer ship for the opensuse distribution (core). Coming from Ubuntu, there is a way to enter the project without any hassles. So, if it's nowadays the way to maintain an official package by community members, what is the way to apply for "official opensuse community upload rights"? Regarding my time schedule, I could take some, or push new packages into it... \sh -- Stephan Hermann eMail: sh@sourcecode.de Blog: http://linux.blogweb.de/ JID: sh@linux-server.org OSS-Developer and Admin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org

Currently there is no good way. I say currently, because it's very high on our list to change. The currently preferred way is to become the co-maintainer, maintain the package in a build service project and let the other co-maintainer, which has to be a SUSE packager, copy the package. That process works for some packages already. unfortunatly we do not have reached this step yet. What we need to do before is * Building the distro within the build service to make it reachable and transparent for everybody. we have reached the first step where all current sources are inside of the openSUSE:Factory project and they do build against official rpms to show the status. This does show us that we have to * cleanup factory <> factory-extra dependencies, currently there are some packages in factory which needs factory-extra packages for buidling. * solve the java issues, this means either move away packages which needs binary only java elements or try to build them with a free java engine (or adapt our policies). * Support baselibs build (the -32bit packages) * offer merge request and handle them. At least some of the packages do need a full review (we do so also internally, only very few people can commit directly). This is also needed to avoid endless building projects without to finish ever. We do work atm a bit on the java issues, but our main focus for the next 4 weeks are the real end-user interface for easy downloading and installing software. So, right now, a package can get prepared from anyone in the build service, in best case on top of the openSUSE:Factory package, but we still need an internal one to submit it. bye adrian -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) email: adrian@suse.de --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org
