[opensuse-packaging] Fwd: Status of SUSE Package Conventions
Hello, I'm wondering what is the status of SPC. Which is the latest revision? On the page [*] I have 2 links on pdf version (rev 1.0) and html version (rev 1.1), the last contains only Part 1, that seems odd to me. I'd guess that it's rev 1.1, or hope so since that's the one I use as a reference.

That's because, for some reason, they split the HTML version and the server only sends you the first part.

Try going through: <URL:http://en.opensuse.org/Documentation> Almost at the bottom, in the bit about developer documentation, there's a link to rev 1.1 in PDF format. Would still be quite useful to have it online (read: as HTML) again. Or maybe in a form where people can add comments, hints, additional information. cheers - -- -o) Pascal Bleser http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/ /\\ <pascal.bleser@skynet.be> <guru@unixtech.be> _\_v The more things change, the more they stay insane. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFGI+bNr3NMWliFcXcRAoyrAKCQWXTJPQiwrICHqa9TuRpfTSMFpgCgtv+H kXGmY0St7Q8aLkIomWzMwRM= =Zfy2 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org

Well, as a temporary measure, I've copied the entire thing onto my server[0] here: <URL:http://www.davjam.org/mediawiki/index.php/openSUSE:Packageconventions> I'll have to think about where would be a suitable location for it under opensuse.org, at which point it can move to their servers. [0] don't expect it to be a speed-demon. It's located at the end of a DSL connection with only 400Kbps up. In fact, there is a direct link at openSUSE wiki, at the place I thought most suitable: http://en.opensuse.org/Documentation#Developer_Documentation I prefer to have it done this way, the version on Novell's site is regularly updated from SVN. And at the same repository lies HTML version also - it would be good enough to link it directly from the wiki I think, I just did not know that someone would like to have a HTML version. Here is a link to all the files: http://forgeftp.novell.com//library/SUSE%20Package%20Conventions/
Would still be quite useful to have it online (read: as HTML) again.

Well, I also do not think this is a good idea. SPC is a part of much larger documented maintained in SUSE (I am its maintainer) and it does not make sense to make a version different from an upstream version. I will gladly incorporate any information, hints or comennts someone sends me - it would make sense to create a wiki page with instructions how to contribute to SPC. Which points to the PDF version, not an online version.

That's a useful link but there's a missing file, namely one describing the RPM package style which is part one of the PDF. Also, while the other pages are available to view online, once you find them, the spc.html file isn't. Trying to view it online results in the page being offered for download.

I can see a good point for allowing comments and hints, and even other additional information, provided that these additions are marked as such.

That's also a good idea. Link to the main pages on forgeftp.novell.com and have the wiki pages almost like a discussion page, or a forum[0]. There's also the possibility of holding the discussions about bits of the guidelines on this list. [0] Are there actually any plans to create an openSUSE web forum?
