Because of some fixes for recent autoconf/automake versions
The configure script was generated with the most recent version of autoconf. Why do you need to fix anthing? The package does not use automake in any way. Why do you need automake?
It's not true. The package stills use depreciated macros like AC_INIT($HEADER) and a lot of other things. But whatever, I'm not a beginner. I have done these changes for a good reason. I just need help to regenerate the configure script. I'm not an autotools expert but, if I have well understood, the configure.ac file has to specify makefile.in as his output. I don't know how to do, and I'm not sure to be right.
