Re: [suse-multimedia-e] HELP! I've destoyed sound capabilities-SOLVED

It's strange, I can play wavs, .au's mp3 etc..I can play from cd...but some apps still report no audio device. I've had an exhaustive search on the Internet and read umpteen faq's and I'm really none the wiser, so I decide to bite the bullet, backup everything and install Suse 7.3 (I'm getting a copy tomorro :). At least I'll know not to make the same mistake... Thanks for all your help... P.S. To anyone reading this thread at a later date, take note of your system configuration just after a fresh install and then see what's changed...That's what I plan to do from now on.

Hello Saimon,
Basically..I tried different volume settings but to no avail...Taking a closer look I realised that everything had been muted... ;) So I unmuted it and things seem to be working... ;)...
hehe, lol.
MIDI though is still not working....
cat /dev/midi or /dev/sequencer both return 'no such device'
I've never had a problem with sound at all so it's not something I've tinkered with. MIDI works fine for me so I did an lsmod on my system, the output is appended at the bottom of the message. It appears that I have no less than five extra modules, namely,
snd-seq-oss snd-synth-emux, snd-seq-virmidi, snd-emux-mem snd-seq-device
by my reckoning. As I say this doesn't mean much to me but maybe it will to you! BTW, I'm running SuSE 7.2 with alsa-0.5.10-77 installed by default.
The other thing I noticed is in the Control Center. Under YaST2 modules go to soundcard and make sure the "Start Sequencer" box is checked.
Hope that helps.
Paul.
