My first camera produced avi-files that I could not and still cannot play in Linux. But my new Samsung Pro 820 produces avi-files that I can play, with either Xine or Kaffeine. I know that avi is no real format, it just a combination of some sound format plus some video format, so it depends largely on what is contained in your avi files. About 'dat' I know nothing, did not even know that it should be playable. Marc -- XS2Mail: Check your mail anywhere http://www.xs2mail.com/
As much I know .dat Is VCD File formet when u open a vcd u can see 5 folders with MPEGAV folder (.Dat video file live's here ) In windows HeroSDVD Player even Windows Media Player can play this . But In linux u can try ( Xine ; Mplyer ) if u have it . but i am not sure ! Marc van Munnen wrote:

In Windows I easily rename *.dat to *.mpg and it works fine everywhere...Maybe that should work in Linux too? -- Sergey Mkrtchyan Scientific Researcher Department of Molecular Physics, Faculty of Physics, Yerevan State University Tel: (374-10) 55-43-41 Fax: (374-10) 57-76-89
.dat is actually a mpeg 1 video , same like dvd . DVD Is actually mpeg 2 video but when u explore u will see video files as .vob . so .dat is for vcd and vob is for dvd Sergey Mkrtchyan wrote:

Not sure if it's true what I say: As much as I know .dat is a mpg1 file from a video-CD. *Sometimes* it helps just to rename the file to .mpg. If mplayer doesn't play it, give a try to the VLC media player: http://www.videolan.org/ Whenever I couldn't play something using my common programs, the VLC media player could...
