ripping dvd

DVD Decrypter is my choice for ripping (just copying) dvd to my HD over Windows. What about ripping DVD in linux? What are (if there are) the best programs? I prefer something that rips subtitles (embeded or not) too. Doing the monitor always "on" in FVWM2

Dear my friends... I am using FVWM2 and SuSE Linux 8.1. I succeeded to make kiosk with FVWM2. FVWM2 is perfect for kiosk. My boss request is now to make the monitor to be always "on". No stand by modus, no screen saver. How can I do this? Please tell me. Hi Henry, Have no experience with xine, sorry... I use mplayer and am EXTREMELY happy with it :) I guess the one that comes with SuSE8.1 is already quite a decent one, if it's missing any special functionality you need - try to look in www.mplayerhq.hu for a newer version... Web Camera Help Needed

Hi Andy here just got 8.1 desktop and loaded it on my Toshiba Satellite 1900-803 P4 laptop it's a wow experience. the cdr is recognized but the dvd part is not,and ogle or mplayer can't find it to play my dvds any idea's on how to get suse to recognise the dvd part of the drive while keeping the cdrw bits working Andy Pickard Yorkshire

Sound Blaster PCI 512: sound through the speakers, none to the applications

Other people have reported this behavior on this and the German multimedia list, but I haven't seen anyone post an answer that works. I've got SuSE 8.1 with a Creative Labs Soundblaster PCI 512. I checked by modules.conf file, and all the lines that the ALSA documentation say should be there were put there by YAST. I'm trying to record (using record or audacity or broadcast2000) from a cassette deck hooked to the the line-in input on my soundcard. Although I can *hear* the sound from my tapedeck fine through the speakers, no app seems to be able to get the sound. Nothing shows up on the meters, and if I save the files and play them, no sound is there. I am using alsamixergui, and have the line-in set as the recording input (with the little red "light" icons). Any suggestions?

I have some tapes of lectures, religious services, etc. that I would like to capture to my hard drive and then using K3B burn to cd's. I would like to know if there is any software preferrable GUI based that will capture the output of the cassette player that is hooked up to the sound input connection and save to the hard drive? I've done something similair to this using two seperate apps. First open KMix and specify which input to use. This took a little trial and error for me. I'd highlight one and blow into the mic until I found the right one. Next open up record, just go to a command prompt and type in "record" (i believe this it came with sox). This will open up an archaic looking interface but don't let it scare you. The instructions are right there. I run it with the auto-adjust turned off, it seems to come out better. When ever your ready to record hut the spacebar and it will begin outputting to a wave file in your home directory unless you specify otherwise. When your done jsut hit the spacebar again and it stops recording. There a man page for it that is also pretty small and straight forward.
