Hi,
Just spent about 2 nights trying to get a working linux installation on a new Powerbook G4 550Mhz/20GB/512MB. After trying with different ISO files from Yellowdog, linuxppc and even Mandrake, I came back to SuSE, which I use since 1995 under i386.
The 7.3 is not out yet (at least here in Zürich), so I had to take the older 7.1. I had many problems with with installation, but the other tread "Re: [suse-ppc] suse-linux and 667Mhz- powerbook G4" helped a lot: I had *exactely* the same problems (not really surprising: Ben's notebook is the 667MHz version of mine).
- The only way to boot is using the OF and the hd:10,install image
--> is there *really* no other way?
- No network (if not configured via linuxrc) : reason is I guess that the install file is a 2.4.12 kernel, and the files in /lib/modules/ are for a 2.4.2 kernel -> version problems...
--> how could I compile another kernel to replace the install file ? tried to replace it with the vmlinux file, but it failed.
- no XFree yet: sax fails, and using the XF86Config file from http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/~tkurosu/SuSE-v71-PPC-install.log doesn't help
Some other little but very annoying things: - how can I set the notebook to sleep/suspend mode ? (no apm command found) - mounting HFS (not HFS+) partitions also fails (but it's maybe because of the modules problem). - the fan is running very loud under linux, even with a load of 0.00
So, I hope it situation will be better under 7.3 (could somebody from Suse confirm?). Any input welcome :-)
Regards, Olivier

In SuSE Linux 7.1 there is only a 2.4.2er Kernel (and 2.2.something) I'm very happy with 2.4.14 on my PowerBook G3. Just Download it from ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/ configure it, compile it with
make dep make clean make vmlinux make modules make modules_install
Now you can install the kernel (vmlinux) as replacement of the old kernel. Don't forget to change links on the kernel if you use some.

It's a very old version on 7.1. Take the Update to XFree86 4.1.0 from the ftp-server from SuSE.
Some other little but very annoying things:

Use pmud, it's not part of SuSE Linux 7.1 and it dosen't work very well on my notebook.
- mounting HFS (not HFS+) partitions also fails (but it's
maybe because of the modules problem).
Works fine hire with kernel 2.4.14. As I remember it worked also fine with kernel 2.4.2 (and not very much worked on kernel 2.4.2 ...)
- the fan is running very loud under linux, even with a load of 0.00
Hm, I can only here the harddisk on my Powerbook, everything else is silent.
So, I hope it situation will be better under 7.3 (could somebody from Suse confirm?). Any input welcome :-)
If you understand german, take a look on my homepage, I've written down, what I've done to be happy with my PowerBook. It's a G3 Wallstreet II, but maybe this can help you with your G4:

[kernel howto :)]

yes, I know how to build a new kernel, but I'm affraid it won't help here: the file I'm looking for it the one to setup on the suseboot partition, and which I call under OF with boot hd:10,install
It doesn't seem to be a kernel file (at least I tried to replace it with a vmlinuz file, and the boot failed). I'll make some more tries...

Ok, could be tried... Thanks for the advice.

it doesn't work very well ? :) I hope that's a typo :) Will also be tried.

Danke, sieht interessant aus. But The PB G3 are "supported" by Suse, not the G4's, so there are more problems... (usuall problem with new hardware...)

On my G3 the kernel image is in the directory where bootx is installed and there's a link into the "Sytemordner". The G4 has an other boot konzept (new world rom) so I can't say, what is the difference.

I can't find out what keeps the PowerBook awake. Sometime it goes to bed, when I'm typing on my keyboard. I don't think this should be...
