Hi, Just spent about 2 nights trying to get a working linux installation on a new Powerbook G4 550Mhz/20GB/512MB. After trying with different ISO files from Yellowdog, linuxppc and even Mandrake, I came back to SuSE, which I use since 1995 under i386. The 7.3 is not out yet (at least here in Zürich), so I had to take the older 7.1. I had many problems with with installation, but the other tread "Re: [suse-ppc] suse-linux and 667Mhz- powerbook G4" helped a lot: I had *exactely* the same problems (not really surprising: Ben's notebook is the 667MHz version of mine). - The only way to boot is using the OF and the hd:10,install image --> is there *really* no other way? - No network (if not configured via linuxrc) : reason is I guess that the install file is a 2.4.12 kernel, and the files in /lib/modules/ are for a 2.4.2 kernel -> version problems... --> how could I compile another kernel to replace the install file ? tried to replace it with the vmlinux file, but it failed. - no XFree yet: sax fails, and using the XF86Config file from http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/~tkurosu/SuSE-v71-PPC-install.log doesn't help Some other little but very annoying things: - how can I set the notebook to sleep/suspend mode ? (no apm command found) - mounting HFS (not HFS+) partitions also fails (but it's maybe because of the modules problem). - the fan is running very loud under linux, even with a load of 0.00 So, I hope it situation will be better under 7.3 (could somebody from Suse confirm?). Any input welcome :-) Regards, Olivier -- _________________________________________________________________ Olivier Mueller - om@8304.ch - PGPkeyID: 0E84D2EA - Switzerland qmail projects: http://omail.omnis.ch - http://webmail.omnis.ch
