Hi,
I've had a little look around the web to look where you can buy openSUSE DVDs - just the DVD - and like to know what you are aware of and can recommend?
Just some examples I found: http://www.osdisc.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi/products/linux/suse http://www.thelinuxcdstore.com/index.php?cPath=25&osCsid=60f8bbf19445ce5... http://easylinuxcds.com/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=prodshow&ref=opensuse&...
Where would you buy if openSUSE was on offer?

For me, until Novell stopped selling boxes, I used to buy them through Amazon. I have no idea how prevalent or popular Amazon is in other countries, but it's pretty popular around here in the US. Also Newegg might be a good place as well.

I am the official importer for the UK but its retail boxes I don't sell downloaded copies. I sell though amazon or direct at www.bolin.org.uk (www.bolin.org.uk/opencart) amazon is expensive as a retailer.
There fees are 4x that of paypal. But I guess if you work out ebay listing fees plus paypal transaction fees its not much different.
There are too many £1.99 sellers on ebay.

wow, amount of crap there is incredible...
Where on amazon? Well amazon doesnt support people using the same name for a different product. This results anybody using the name openSUSE gets open-slx version images and information all copywright information hence why nobody sells opensuse for say £2.50.
Yesterday somebody tried to list openSUSE for £2.50 on Amazon. But they listed it against the retail version which sells for £60 as apose to a downloaded copy which they sell much cheaper. So people think they are buying retail but get a download/burned copy instead.
Is it acceptable for people to download openSUSE dvd either 32bit or 64bit and sell it on?
I am trying to promote openSUSE with Telephone support and printed Documentation to help newbies make the switch. People selling on cheap DVD don't offer support and without it many people do struggle. And put off my customers as they think they can get the product cheaper elsewhere.
If we stop ebayers downloading Linux and selling without support I think we would get more satisfied users.
If people choose to sell it they must be prepared to support it. From 12.1 I believe that open-slx is changing the name due to reasons I am unsure about. Will this kill what little sales there are on Amazon anyway?

Yes, Amazon is a mess.
Is it acceptable for people to download openSUSE dvd either 32bit or 64bit and sell it on?
Yes, it is Free Software, we can't and don't want to forbid it. But they have to represent it properly - and not claim it has any support or warranty, as you mention below. That is an issue. Moreover, what can be downloaded is not exactly the same as what openSLX (and you) offer with the boxed version.
I am trying to promote openSUSE with Telephone support and printed Documentation to help newbies make the switch. People selling on cheap DVD don't offer support and without it many people do struggle. And put off my customers as they think they can get the product cheaper elsewhere.
Yup, it is a challenge. We can go after those who mis-represent what they offer on Amazon, otherwise - it is Free Software.
If we stop ebayers downloading Linux and selling without support I think we would get more satisfied users.
At least make sure there is a clear distinction between the openSLX boxed product and the download-for-free version. We, as in I myself nor SUSE Linux Products GmbH do have the resources to go after that. However, as it is in your own business interest as well, feel free to talk to the openSUSE Board about how to handle this. The Board has the authority to tell such mis- representing resellers to stop or change their tune.
I am sure they will support you if they can. It would be possible for example to draft up a standard email warning/complaint about a 'improper representation' according to our branding guidelines. You'd be able to send those out. Or something like that - I'm not sure exactly as the board would have to decide, but be sure to CC me in case you want to discuss this with them. Personally I think we should indeed work to guarantee proper communication.

That is a risk, yes. But openSLX made that choice and you'd have to talk to them about it...

Right that is what I thought, they put their own cover and use no (C) images then they are in the clear and any support they claim is purely on their own, although the community will help them where they can as they do everybody but they are not responsible for retailer support.

what is the @opensuse.org email for the board is it opensuse-board perchance?
I just think that people are put off by random versions on linux floating around on market stalls, most retailers don't have a clue which version suits which needs so somebody who needs a stable and simple desktop computer may well end up with one which is for the seriously technically minded.
If Linux was left to those that knew what they are talking about, and not sold along side 3D Goldfish screensavers and the like we really would do better.
If people choose to sell it they must be prepared to support it. From 12.1 I believe that open-slx is changing the name due to reasons I am unsure about. Will this kill what little sales there are on Amazon anyway?

I don't know what has been said between open-SLX and openSUSE, I am not privey to the conversations, but if open-SLX has had a dissagreement with the board or the branding guidlines have changed, as long as its openSUSE in the box I don't care what it says on the box. if its powered by openSUSE to me it is openSUSE (with whatever extentions are added to the image after.
Anyway I am off to build contacts, have a bus to London at 9:45 for a two day "Small Business, New Buiness" Confrence.
BTW on the 21st of June I am giving a presentation on openSUSE and also Linux in Everyday life to a group of students 16-19 at the Zonos IT Accademy (www.zonos.com) , I presume I am ok to use the stock presenter templates and posters from marketing git.
I wish i could damn figure how to get my HTC Desire HD emails past the mailing list sensor bot i have set the email to be sent in plain text but still it seems to be sending part text/part html.

Yup. But in the end, it IS Free Software... Firefox and OpenOffice have this same problem - there are sites which try to sell them to people who don't know about them... :(

Dear All
I have been offered a unique chance to promote openSUSE here in the UK, a few months ago a new FREE newspaper appeared on the streets of London its name is Laissez Faire.
I have been offered a full page expose on openSUSE instroducing the software and an editorial on the background of it.
The issue will be launched on the 1st June 2011.
Laissez Faire, is an Arts based newspaper which is looking to focus on the Innovation side of Linux. Not that Linux is new, but we do constantly come up with new software and innovative solutions for its use. Also because the idea of Linux is quite new to people they may also see this as innovative.
Following on from the months Article, the owner has promised me three to four / ongoing features on openSUSE to continue to promote it over windows.
This as I am sure you are aware could potentially help push awareness of openSUSE here in the UK where we are lagging way behind ubuntu as #1 alternative to Windows.
In order to get all this promotion, the owner of the newspaper has asked me to take out 1 full page advertisement in his newspaper which costs 700 pounds plus vat @ 20% this is 840 pounds in total.
If I ignore all my monthly bills and skip everything for one month and catchup next month, I can currently raise about 500 pounds toward the cost, maybe more depending on if anybody depends to purchase a retail box this week.
Would the community or any individual be able to assist me with this one time cost?
The bill needs to be paid on 31st May 2011, so there is not much time.
I really hope something works to be able to pay for this advertising because it has the potential (with a distribution of 15,000 copies and each copy read on average 3 times) to reach a potential audience of 45,000 Londoners.
And of those, if other newspapers / journalists pick up on it, then its possible that we could then move onto other things.
Stuart

ail box this week.
For some reason this is ringing alarm bells for me. Maybe it's that it's a 'New' paper, plus the vague "promise". It's a LOT of money to invest and frankly I'm dubious.
Maybe I'm a cynic but I'd do your homework on these people before handing over the hard-earned.
cheers

Well perhaps, I have seen the newspaper in print, I don't know how much other newspapers charge, but it could be a con or it could just been a new paper looking to promote something new, I guess time will tell.
But if they don't publish the advert, and it doesn't appear on the streets on London then I have reason enough to make a claim against them I guess.

isn't that more expensive than publishing your own document and giving it to public in IT stores? In France any IT store or nearly accept to keep such related to IT document on table, and the users are IT users

Yes, it IS a lot of money. 840 pounds for a full-page advert fits in a pretty darn big newspaper. Moreover, as it's targeting general public instead of it- interested people, don't count on too many responses.
THen again, they also offered (if I understand it correctly) some articles and other mentions. If you can get some kind of guarantee that you'll get that, AND pay afterwards instead of up-front, it might be worth it.
To get the money you can either set up a pledgie or use paypal & blog about it... But again, make sure you get what you pay for!
