[opensuse-marketing] Codenames of animals
Dear all! Apart these version number threads, this thread give another point: In 11.3 the codename was "Teal" in 11.2 "Emerald". Maybe we can change the codename to the names of animals, who are threatened with extinction. As an example: openSUSE 12.0 "Narwhal" (Okay, a little bit Ubuntu copy in this case, but I simply don´t know such an animal, and I´m too lazy to search ;) ) What do you think? It´s independant from the version number discussion and we can maybe tell the world. to pay more attention to these animals. Remember: openSUSE is more then "just" an operating system thanks -- Kim Leyendecker (kimleyendecker@hotmail.de) openSUSE Ambassador http://www.opensuse.org powered by openSUSE 11.4 | KDE 4.6 | x86_64 Notebook | usecase: Workstation openSUSE/Slashdot Profilname: openLHAG (OpenLHAG) Have you tried SUSE Studio? Because of the large number of emails you received, may not have seen the other email, but I will resend for no misunderstandings. Chuck is right. We can not go copying quirks of a distro or another. We must create our own means, that already exists. I would not want my favorite distro copying mode numbering or other codenames. We can create! And my feeling is that regardless of whether we think such discussions are good or not, codenaming a development project belongs to a different mailing list than marketing. Marketing team has nothing to do with the development of the next release. It is the baby of the folks in factory or (possibly) more broadly in -project. And the parents are the ones who have the right to name their babies. Our input on naming/versioning etc should be for the end product that we actually market. Deciding 11.5 or 12.0 has impact in how we market the release, but codenaming... no it doesn't. Let the parents name their baby, not us. Although I have seen 'Celadon' appear in some press comments here and there, so to some extent it is relevant. It seems some media expect a name. And frankly, while I might not be writing code, I think my contribution gives me some small degree of ownership and the right to have a say. cheers, Helen -- IRC: helen_au helen.south@opensuse.org helensouth.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

You are absolutely correct, and I don't mean to imply that we, as individuals, don't have a say. My point is that such a discussion about a factorydevelopment product should happen in the appropriate mailing list. In this case, it should be on the -factory ML or arguably, on the Project ML. *IF* we even think such a discussion should occur (and some people think it shouldn't.) Besides, as marketers, we should all be on other mailing lists and not just our own. Discussions of product that have broader implications should be discussed at that product's homebase or we'll continue to have two camps diverging. Marketers should offer input on marketing impact on those lists as well. We need more interactivity, not separation. For some out there, people are saying those marketing guys are making all these decisions without consulting us. And if we persist in having such discussions as codenaming here instead of over there, we're only reinforcing that perception. Ok. That wasn't my impression from the 'their baby' comment, but I stand corrected.

Good point; with the plethora of lists, I haven't been entirely sure what I should be subscribed to, and certainly some of these discussions do impact the whole project. My impression was that Project and Factory is purely development and production oriented, ie for the discussion of core coding type issues, similar to project on Freenode. Perhaps project and factory people should also be subscribed to marketing then, for marketing-relevant discussions which may impact them? It sounds like everyone should be subscribed to everything.... /facepalm :P cheers, Helen -- IRC: helen_au helen.south@opensuse.org helensouth.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Currently the developers (more specifically the release team & some ppl around it) come up with a name. Let them keep doing that, I see no harm in it - usually it's funny or geeky or just "whatever". Feel free to mail coolo with suggestions, however ;-)
