[opensuse-marketing] our new brochure?
Hi all, You might wonder - what happened to the brochure. Well, call it the Black Hole of the Web, call it a fluke - a mail with comments on the latest draft got lost and progress stopped for a while. But we're back in Business, Karl Cheney has made an updated version - and here it is. Let us know your thoughts, esp when it comes to refining the text!!! We'll unfortunately have to cut the text a bit to make an A4 version, according to Karl, if anyone could try to cut the text by 5-10% that'd be awesome. Karl, where can we find the text(s) to shrink, could you send it as an txt file maybe? Cheers, Jos

Some remarks, the OBS text speak about more things which we don't really have in a mature state. I think it would be better to point out to the cool stuff which we have already. For example: COOL: * Everybody can build rpm or debian packages for openSUSE, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu Mandriva, SLES or RHEL from one source. The building is done in a 100% reproducable way. COOL++: * Build jobs can be monitored and controlled via web, CLI or via simple REST API. * Local builds can be done easily targeting any distribution without the need to install such a system yourself. * appliances or entire distribution products can get build * Your users can add the repositories in their installers directly * modifications and fast prototyping of single packages or large software stacks can be done easily, eg. test your software stack with a new compiler or base library. * Every developer or end-user can easily see how packages have been changed, branch them and submit modifications back. * Distribution maintenance update support is about to come to OBS. For more information please visit: http://build.opensuse.org In general there is quite a lot of links and space to used to link to closed environments like facebook. And no link to our free resources like news.o.o. I don't think that this is a good first impression for a OSS project. Also below appinstaller you say that we collaborate with Red Hat, while this is not wrong, I think we should maybe better mention the Fedora project instead, because that is our working base to each other. Below Tumbleweed, I would personally like to see it mentioned that OBS is used as collaboration place for that project ;) However, while I of course agree that our infrastructure is great, I think it takes too much room on this paper. At least when you target end-users in first place, they don't want to build packages or appliances, they want cool applications. And they want a nice community, no word about the forums, mail and IRC here. This IMHO what should be mentioned first instead of Studio and OBS.

Well, we can keep this flyer for a long time (considering how long it took to make it) so I would rather make sure it is future proof. What is experimental now will probably work in 6 months and I bet we won't refresh this for at least a year, if not more. Then we'd miss some cool features :D (This btw also means I shouldn't have written "windows package support in the making") Now the text you wrote below is quite long, which is a bit of an issue. You might notice we tried to write as much info in as little words as possible... But you think we should emphasize different things, right? Let's try to do that.
COOL:
* Everybody can build rpm or debian packages for openSUSE, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu Mandriva, SLES or RHEL from one source. The building is done in a 100% reproducable way. <snip other changes>
Don't you think we should mention the direct pull from git or SVN? Or the use of VMs? Those usually get my audience go like<deepvoice> "coool"</deepvoice>.. One change we DO need to do is change openSUSE Build Service to Open Build Service :D If you think windows support won't be there anytime soon, we should remove it. So how about this: Open Build Service COOL Build rpm and deb packages on a central server, pulling from git/SVN and using VMs to build for any platform or OS COOL++ works from a web browser, cli or REST api builds for 21 linux distributions on 6 architectures can generate Windows “packages” user can branch packages and submit modifications offers distribution maintenance update support Hopefully fits... This should basically cover the points you added, mostly at least :D
In general there is quite a lot of links and space to used to link to closed environments like facebook. And no link to our free resources like news.o.o. I don't think that this is a good first impression for a OSS project.
Good point. Karl, could you add a link to news.opensuse.org as premier news source? And add connect.opensuse.org as 'connect with openSUSE' somehow.
Also below appinstaller you say that we collaborate with Red Hat, while this is not wrong, I think we should maybe better mention the Fedora project instead, because that is our working base to each other.
Karl, can you change that?
Below Tumbleweed, I would personally like to see it mentioned that OBS is used as collaboration place for that project ;)
maybe add: - build on OBS! But let's skip it if there is no room...
However, while I of course agree that our infrastructure is great, I think it takes too much room on this paper. Well, this folder is supposed to target the average conference go-er. And those are quite a bit more technical than the average home user - whom we barely ever reach anyway... Add to that that one side of the flyer IS dedicated to talking about home users, sysadmins & developers as well as talking about our community I think it should be OK. However, you are right on IRC and forums - we could add links to those as well: forums.opensuse.org #opensuse at freenode.net But those last two links I leave at the discretion of Karl as I don't know if that fits in a way that looks good.... Karl, can you make the changes?
But we're back in Business, Karl Cheney has made an updated version - and here it is. Let us know your thoughts, esp when it comes to refining the text!!!

Please take into account local customisation and translation. I mean that of course we need the source, but also that when printing locally, color is unavailable as shown on the project. It's pretty easy (and in France mandatory - blank paper is only authorized for government papers for public diffusion) to use color paper, but then of course the color is the same everywhere nd the photo only B&W that said, the document is very smart :-) thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.youtube.com/user/jdddodinorg http://jdd.blip.tv/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Hmm, what you are saying is that we need a black-and-white version, yes? Karl, can you do that in a reasonable way, you think, or does that require a lot of re-design? Moreover, Karl, you mentioned the text is a tad long and for an A4 version we need to shorten it... Could you send the text that is too much to me in a separate mail, I'll munch over it and shorten it a bit. Please tell me by how much approximately I need to shorten it... Thanks a lot! Jos

I found a couple of typos:
- Working Together:
"...supporting 21 distro’s on seven architectures." - remove the
apostrophe in "distros".
- For Users:
"But shoulld you want more..." - should be "should"
- For Administrators:
"It’s powerful and flexibile with it’s unique command line" - remove
apostrophe in second "its".
- Get Connected:
- Twitter.com and Identi.ca should probably be lower case.
- SUSE Studio:
- "customized with your packages, script and artwork" - suggest
pluralizing "scripts".
- "desktop Choice" heading should be "Desktop Choice" (upper case)
- Tumbleweed:
URL is http://en.opensuse.org/tumbleweed - all other URLs lack the
protocol specifier (not sure if this is intentional).
Nice brochure, BTW :)

Tim

Senior Clustering Engineer, OPS Engineering, Novell Inc. I think "It’s powerful and flexibile with it’s unique command line" is OK. The second "it's" is indicating possession whereas the first "it's" is indicating a contraction of it is. both correct usages afaik.

Yep, the first "it's" is a contraction of "it is". But the second "its"
is a possessive pronoun, for which apostrophes should never be used (see
rules 9 and 10 at http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/apostro.asp).
(Actually, if you're really bored^H^H^H want to get really technical,
apostrophes *always* indicate contractions - the reason they're used for
possessive nouns, e.g.: "John's cat" is because in Old English that
would have been "Johnes cat", and the apostrophe indicates the removal
of the "e" - see http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/pcrrn/apostrophe/page3.htm)
