Is Kubic good for production use?
Good Morning Ist Kunic being used in production settings or is it more of a research kind of project? My testing indicates that it is stable, no issues so far. Has there ever been a situation where a transaction-update rendered the system unusable? Thanks, Marc

Depends on your definition of "production settings". I personal have a "production cluster" running, but there is nothing business critical running on it and before I spend hours on debugging, a fresh installation is much faster. But to be honest: the problem was always that I hadn't updated the cluster for too long. Kubic is like Tumbleweed a rolling release, means you need to update it regular and you shouldn't wait too long, else kubeadm will refuse to update your cluster. So if you are stick to a specific Kubernetes version, Kubic isn't for you. If there is any business involved, I wouldn't use a community product without any support and the risk that the community makes incompatible changes or looses the interest, I would look for something where I can buy support and maintenance if necessary.

No and Yes: yes, there were situations where an update rendered the system unuseable. But thanks to transactional update, a rollback fixed the problem. transactional-update itself will and cannot render a system unuseable, only broken patches. And if a patch is broken it doesn't matter how you apply it. The good thing on transactional-update here is, that it is really easy to do a rollback to the last working state. At least as far as it concerns RPMs and /etc, containers will have course not be rolled back, as they are not under the control of a package manager Thorsten -- Thorsten Kukuk, Distinguished Engineer, Senior Architect SLES & MicroOS SUSE Software Solutions Germany GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany Managing Director: Felix Imendoerffer (HRB 36809, AG Nürnberg)
