The NVMe subsystem issues I/O and the hardware doesn't respond
in a timely fashion. There is nothing obvious wrong in the logs.
Also the aborts do not happen at once. So it's not something
stops working completely.

Me too. One thing you could check if the drive is overheating (use sensors)
before you start pulling things apart. Also check if there is a firmware
update for the driver (fwupdate).
