Have been testing all afternoon with restarts, some immediate, some after
normal usage, and haven't been able to reproduce the bug.

Using 6.x, when first shutting down to reboot into the older kernel, the bug
prevented a normal shutdown. That argues, to me, that if this weren't a kernel
issue I would have bumped into it by now, using 5.19, but I'll continue using
the older kernel over the week-end and report back if anything changes.
