For the sake of others who might encounter this same issue, I wanted to add one
additional note. 

Even though updating to the 15.3 kernel stopped the kernel panic, there were
still other driver-related issues. For example, the system couldn't get the
radeon nor vesa drivers to load and dropped back to fbdev. This made it
impossible to correctly handle multiple monitors, etc.

As a result, I ended up replacing my Leap installation with Tumbleweed and
things seem to be fully functional now (where it defaulted to the amdgpu
driver).
