[opensuse-kde] How do i switch to KDE 5 / plasma 5 / KF 5 or whatever it's called now
Hi, how can I switch to KDE5? Or is it called Plasma 5? or KF5? I'm running openSUSE 13.2 with KDE 4... First of all, let's clear up the confusion. ;) What you'd like to upgrade is called Plasma 5, which is the so-called workspace. KF5 are the development libraries from which it is built upon. And there won't be a KDE5, ever. :P Jokes aside, you will need the KDE:Frameworks5 repository, and KDE:Applications for updated applications. Bear in mind that a number of packages can't be provided to openSUSE 13.2 due to the old versions of the software stacks it ships with. More details are at https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_repositories. It should be noted that like all third-party repos, those come without support (aka "do it at your own risk"). Nevertheless, if you have issues feel free to post here and we'll see how we can help. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: A29D259B -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

and which folders in ~ should I remove/rename? It seems that lately KDE4 has developed a tendency to splatter configuration/data into a LOT of locations outside ~/.kde4 ... Or could I try to migrate my existing KDE4 configuration to Plasma 5? One thing I know: I am going to create a LVM snapshot of ~ first. This is not a tendency by software, but the application the XDG specification, which wants (warning: extreme simplification) configuration files in ~/.config, application data in ~/.local/share and caches in ~/.cache. You shouldn't however remove any folder - your old kdelibs 4.x apps will keep on behaving normally. (and something I always say when providing support on the KDE Community Forums: *don't* delete .kde[4])
Or could I try to migrate my existing KDE4 configuration to Plasma 5?
Your desktop configuration will not be used (but it will not be deleted either, should you want to get back to Plasma 4.x). Most KF5 based apps will migrate their settings if possible (without removing the original files, again allowing rollback). -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: A29D259B -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, and KDE4 (and KDE4 applications) still should *only* use ~/.kde4/ and not "splatter" configuration/data elsewhere (and definitely not "into a LOT of locations"). There are some exceptions like Akonadi, which actually is not a KDE4 application, but Qt-only. Plasma5/KF5 (and applications based on it) follow the XDG specification though, i.e. ~/.config, ~/.local/share/, and ~/.cache/ as mentioned. An additional note: if you use the additional Repos, you should do a full switch to them ("zypper dup --from xxx", or "Switch system packages to the versions in this repository" in YaST) to prevent keeping old packages from 13.2:Update that might cause problems (at least that could happen in the past, not sure about the current state). As I see these issues with also other distros as part of doing support in the KDE Community Forums, I *strongly* suggest to a "dup --from" in case you're switching repos for KDE stuff. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: A29D259B -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

How about this on the news.opensuse page to add to the confusion "KDE Plasma has update 15.04.3, which include Long Term Support versions of Plasma Workspaces 4.11.21. "

"KDE Plasma has update 15.04.3, which include Long Term Support versions of Plasma Workspaces 4.11.21. "
How is this related? Do you see anything about "KDE 5" there? ;-) They probably just copied that verbatim from the KDE Applications release announcement: https://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-applications-15.04.3.php "This release also includes Long Term Support versions of Plasma Workspaces 4.11.21, KDE Development Platform 4.14.10 and the Kontact Suite 4.14.10." and appended it in an unfortunate way to the news entry (I agree with that). And this is even incorrect. It was not KDE Plasma that "has update to 15.04.3". It was KDE Applications that got updated to 15.04.3. But it's true that KDE Applictions 15,.04.3 included "Plasma Workspaces 4.11.21", i.e. version 4.11.21 of the KDE4 desktop, and it is available in Tumbleweed too (package kdebase4-workspace). 4.11.22 (included in 15.08.0) was the *final* release though, and there haven't been any real changes since February or so... (4.11.22 only contains a fix for KDM, that is already part of the openSUSE package since December) So "KDE4" (the desktop) is now officially "dead". You can switch to Plasma5 by just installing the package "plasma5-session" (this will remove the KDE4 desktop/workspace). You will need to choose "Plasma 5" on the login screen afterwards though, as the default KDE4 session will not be found any longer. openSUSE 13.2 only contains Plasma 5.3.2 (and no KF5 applications) in the standard repos though. If you want to have the latest 5.4, and/or the latest KDE applications (in particular the KF5 based ones), you need to add the additional repos as Luca wrote.
