[opensuse-kde] Opinions about Plasma 5 in 13.2RC1

Hi. I sent this e-mail to opensuse-testing mailing list and they recommended me to send this mailing list because it is read by the KDE packagers. I don't participate usually because I use OpenSuSE like developer and desktop user, I don't make something "special", but this time I decided to e-mail because I can see some problems in Plasma 5 in 13.1 in 13.2 RC1. My only intention it is the information be helpful. I had installed OpenSuSE 13.2 RC1 in a virtual machine with Plasma 5 and I want to give my impressions: - In the installation there is not the option to add a repository with KDE 5 applications, in my opinion it would be a good idea to add one. I know they are not stable but a person wants to try Plasma 5, probably, he/she wants to try the apps. - I didn't see the possibility to install sddm instead of kdm. If you are installing Plasma 5 looks more consistently. - One time installed the OS with Plasma 5, you have to configure the repos manually. It could be good to give the option in community repositories. - You can't change the color scheme, it is always OpenSuSE colors. - I have various crashes of Plasma, in composer I use OpenGL 3.1. Mainly using kickoff. - When I click in a PDF file in dolphin, okular doesn't open, however if I am going to main menu, open okular and drag the PDF file, I can see it without problem. - I use galician language, in order to can configure it in System Settings, I had to install kde4- l10n-gl. It is a little confusing. - I installed the KDE5 versions of apps (ark, dolphin, ...). The icons in favorites in kickoff didn't work, I had to erase them and add again. Best regards. There are multiple reasons for this: - 4.x applications coexist very well with KF5 based ones (I use KMail 4.x with Plasma 5 for example); - Many KF5 applications will not see an official release before December, or later; - While the progression of Plasma 5.x was fast, there are still some regressions that need to be addressed; - Consensus in the team was to offer Plasma 5 as an option, but it was too early to even think about adding it to the installer (and risky, in my opinion) Note: most of the team is however testing Plasma 5 daily, so we're well aware of its status.
- I didn't see the possibility to install sddm instead of kdm. If you are
To get into Factory, sddm needs a security review. Until that is not done, it will not be added to the distribution. You can however get it from the KDE:Frameworks5 repository IIRC.
be good to give the option in community repositories.
Probably it needs more exposure (we've kept a low profile on it), but adding it to the community repository list is a bit early, IMO.
- You can't change the color scheme, it is always OpenSuSE colors.
This is an upstream bug, I am not sure if it was fixed yet.
- I have various crashes of Plasma, in composer I use OpenGL 3.1. Mainly using kickoff.
Bear in mind that openGL and a VM, and QtQuick (the framework used to build Plasma 5 components) do not play well together.
- I use galician language, in order to can configure it in System Settings,
You will need "systemsettings5" installed in order to configure the 5.x parts.
- I installed the KDE5 versions of apps (ark, dolphin, ...). The icons in favorites in kickoff didn't work, I had to erase them and add again.
This is an upstream bug, I think already reported. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: 6E1A4E79

I had installed OpenSuSE 13.2 RC1 in a virtual machine with Plasma 5 and I want to give my impressions:
- In the installation there is not the option to add a repository with KDE 5 applications, in my opinion it would be a good idea to add one. I know they are not stable but a person wants to try Plasma 5, probably, he/she wants to try the apps. IMO, it's not a good idea to offer repositories building unreleased software built from trunk..
- I didn't see the possibility to install sddm instead of kdm. If you are installing Plasma 5 looks more consistently. We are waiting on security team's evaluation. Luca indicated where you can get it meanwhile ;-)
- One time installed the OS with Plasma 5, you have to configure the repos manually. It could be good to give the option in community repositories. Considering it is more-less offered to those who know what they are doing, for now i believe this is not necessary. And not sure which repos you mean? Even with kde4 the unstable repositories wheren't offered...
- You can't change the color scheme, it is always OpenSuSE colors. To any, or some schemes?
- I have various crashes of Plasma, in composer I use OpenGL 3.1. Mainly using kickoff. Could be https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=336493 'Application menu' launcher appears not to expose this bug.
- When I click in a PDF file in dolphin, okular doesn't open, however if I am going to main menu, open okular and drag the PDF file, I can see it without problem. This is why the applications are only in KDE:Unstable:Frameworks repository, as there are rapid changes there (and no release yet, as Luca mentioned). Even so, this particular issue should be resolved with latest available okular5 package (is fixed few days ago already)
- I use galician language, in order to can configure it in System Settings, I had to install kde4- l10n-gl. It is a little confusing. Available translations are picked up if you have systemsettings translations, so either l10n-gl, or more fitting systemsettings5-lang. This package is available already in Factory, and will be in 13.2, not sure it is already published there,
- I installed the KDE5 versions of apps (ark, dolphin, ...). The icons in favorites in kickoff didn't work, I had to erase them and add again.
During recent weeks most applications' desktop files have been renamed according to latest FDO spec (i.e. using reverse DNS, so e.g. there's no more dolphin.desktop but org.kde.dolphin.desktop, etc). I believe same thing happened with GNOME apps in their 3.14 release Cheers, Hrvoje
Best regards.
