[opensuse-kde] krandom.kss crashes with SIGILL
Hi, I am running a vanilla Opensuse 10.3 system with all updates applied on a Via C3 processor: processor : 0 vendor_id : CentaurHauls cpu family : 6 model : 7 model name : VIA Ezra stepping : 8 cpu MHz : 863.019 cache size : 64 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu de tsc msr cx8 mtrr pge mmx 3dnow up bogomips : 1728.22 clflush size : 32 For around a week now, the Random Screen Saver has been crashing whenever it has tried to start. I assume that it is trying some instruction which my processor cannot handle. I was away for almost a week recently and a large number of updates had accumulated in that time, including some for the Kernel, x11 and something kde-related. One of those is presumably responsible but . . . --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

And of course you have no backtrace, right? The last time I've seen this problem it was because of broken ATI driver. You can revert those updates and check which one is responsible. Sven --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
I suspect not even one of the newer updates or the ATI-Driver. We have a few systems here with Intel915 Chips and the problem seems to be occurring with one specific screen saver. (Motor). I myself use random screen savers without problems except it starts motor. Could be a problem with OpenGL maybe but i cannot say this for sure. A Colleague switched from Motor where his system froze regularly to a 2D screensaver and he has no problems anymore. Stefan

Well, I replied a day ago but it seems that reply went to Stefan rather than to the list. ATI is a good guess (wrong word?) 'cos it matches my hardware. The video driver module worked perfectly until the last Kernel upgrade - which was one of a number applied simultaneously. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Well, I then had the same problem with OpenOffice (a showstopper), tried loading the debugging kernel and then the system refused to boot completely (got into a twitch/boot loop). Since I could not find the 10.3 DVD and I *really* need this beast to work (and the backups were not as recent as they could have been - a hardware problem) I reverted to 10.1. 10.2 does not even install on my Via C3 hardware. 10.1 appears to be rock solid. All the other 10.3 problems I had are gone. It'll take end-of-life for 10.1 to get me to move again and it won't be to 10.3. Someone seems to be compiling 10.3 update packages with instructions my poor little Via does not know.
