12.2 RC1 x86_64
Open the logout/shutdown dialog more than once. A bar along the top of the screen becomes scrambled. I also get this on 12.1 w/ KDE 4.8.4

All I have to do is menu->logout->cancel twice to reproduce?
If so, I cannot reproduce your problem in 4.9RC1, so whatever the problem was, it appears to have been fixed

Me neither, 4.8.4 on 12.1 with nvidia binary driver.

Ok. Must be me. I will try to figure it out. Strange, it even does it inside a VirtualBox VM.
I am using nvidia binary driver also.

Can't reproduce it in 4.8.4 release 513, also using the binary nvidia driver.

After more testing I found the problem exists only on 64bit, with both nvidia binary and nouveau drivers. And I saw it on two different machines. Can anyone confirm?
Grab the 12.2 x86_64 KDE live CD if you need to.

Correct.
The second+ time you open the logout or shutdown dialog, that is when I see it. Don't cancel immediately, the corruption will go away when you close the dialog.

It looks like this in virtualbox. Sometimes it is only a line one single pixel high.

Just curious. Have you tried if it makes a difference if you disable the logout kwin effect - or perhaps even disable kwin effects altogether (press alt+shift+f12 to toggle effects off temporarily)?
That way you can isolate the offending component. Or at least rule out kwin compositing which would be the main suspect for any gfx issues (of course technically it's usually the fault of the gfx drivers and not KWin - but disabling some effect is much easier than fixing a gfx driver).
The logout effect has always caused major garblage for me with Intel945 gfx. So I always have to turn it off.

Problem solved. I found this in dmesg after installing NVidia v304 driver:
NVRM: Your system is not currently configured to drive a VGA console NVRM: on the primary VGA device. The NVIDIA Linux graphics driver NVRM: requires the use of a text-mode VGA console. Use of other console NVRM: drivers including, but not limited to, vesafb, may result in NVRM: corruption and stability problems, and is not supported.
Setting the kernel command line to use text mode solved the problem. (but now I have an ugly low res terminal on 1-6. oh well.)

It need not be low res. Clues to solve in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=675793 (video=).

I'm using openSuse/32 bit 12.1, KDE 4.7.2 with an NVidia card but with the nouveau driver. When I open the logout/shutdown dialog when desktop effects are DISABLED I have a completey corrupted screen, except the logout dialog on top of it.
