[opensuse-kde] Okular and/or Mimetype for pptx Files
Hi List, not sure if there is a bug here. Most likely one way or the other. I got send a .pptx File The System (Opensuse 13.1 with KDE Current ) tried to open it with Okular. Okular crashed (with no discernable errormessage) just that it does not work anymore. Is this because Okular can not open pptx Files (it is a pdf reader as far as I know) ? But if this is the case why is it in the mimetype selection set in front of LibreOffice Impress (also for normal ppt file btw, ) Should I open a Bug for Okular or for a wrong default mimetype selection? I believe .pptx is a PowerPoint(2010 or above) extension so opening with LibreOffice is the correct action. Have you tried opening with LibreOffice directly? Someone may have tried to create a .pdf from a .pptx and not change the extension. In Windows the extension is what determines the file type in choosing the default program, but I believe in openSuse the actual file contents are examined to determine what application to use. I have had some "flakey" .pdf's that I could not open. That is correct. Also .docx These are the 'compressed' versions of the MS-office files HA HA HA

Not always, but you can use the command 'file' to determine the file type. I say 'not always' because Dolphin/konqueror uses a MIME mapping database to determine how to open a file and that see,m to be based on the suffix. What do you mean "the system"? I'm tempted to think that you used something like Dolphin (or Konqueror in file manager mode). If so, see below; if not then please explain how you opened it.

If it is dolphin/konqueror then it is becuase you have it configured that way. Right click on the file and then click on 'properties'. Next click on the 'file type optons' button. You get to a dialog that allows you to view/edit the mime type. As you see, the selection is by suffix and you can have more than one suffix. You can have more than one application that can 'open' the file. Now go back to the file manager. Right click again and this time choose "open with ..." You will see that list of option. Perhaps LibreOffice is there for the mimetype .pptx The dialog to edit the mimetype just visited allows you to change the order as well. There is also a mimetype global editor but I forget what its called. I think the more import issue is why do you have your system configured so that it even tries to use okular on pptx. Got to systemsettings -> file associations and ut "ppt" in the search bar and look at what the associations are for the various variations of powerpoint files. Heck, do you even have Libreoffice, Openoffice or Callibra installed? And what release/updates of openSuse, KDE and Okular are you running?

And what version of Okular are you running? The page at http://okular.kde.org/formats.php shows what types of files can be handled and what operations can be carried out on them. As the man pages says, you can consult the online manua with help:/okular in the search bar or Dolphin or Konqueror I can see no mention whatsoever in any of these sources of Okular being able to handle MS-office documents such as powerpoint, be it compressed or not.

Indeed, and I wonder why you persist in trying to get okular to handle powerpoint when "the rst of us" seem to find out configurations specifying LibreOffice?

I'm wondering if you started out with some alpha/beta release that had these oddball configurations and somehow they were never updated with the setting that those of us who did a straight forward install have. Really: do you have LibreOffice installed? So, to recap: The mime-assoc "pptx" to "okular" is only valid with the package "calligra-stage". Best solution would be to place this mime-assoc in the "calligra-stage" package instead of the main "calligra" package. That way it would only become valid / visible if the package is installed. Could the Calligra packaging team please change the placement of the mime-assoc for pptx to okular ? - Yamaban.

I did duplicate it in another system without Calligra suite or plugins. By default If I make a click on the .ppt or .pptx file it will open with LibreOffice Impress. If I force it to open with Okular it will show a error message about it is not able to open the file. The File Association by default is LibreOffice Impress. The only way to open it with Okular is having the Calligra-Stage plugins. Hi all, As my answering Mail from yesterday somehow managed in the nirvana I will write again. Yes I can open the file with Libreoffice impress and have Calligra installed (without stage) . My mail mainly concerned the what I thought was default mimetype selection which is apparenly caused by the installation of Calligra. After installing stage I can open pptx also with okular.
