[opensuse-kde] Issues with Networking in the openSuse Tumbleweed Snapshot 27092016

Hi all, I have had an installation of openSUSE Tumbleweed KDE and this week updates generated issues with the Networking in an KDE-only system. After the update, the Wi Fi icon in the System tray at the bottom left appeared white and with an " ? " next to it. I later used my cellphone to share the connection via USB, but the same " ? " appeared in the Network icon. I then downloaded a new ISO (27092016) and i did a fresh install. Unfortunately, the same issues happened. Using the same installation media, then i installed Gnome 3.22 and I was able to update the system(i suppose to the latest 28092016 ISO). Back to my Plasma desktop, the networking icon was the same, all white as if it didn't have Wi Fi signal and the " ? " icon next to it, however, i was able to connect myself to the internet and to update the system. Now i have internet, but i am not sure how stable is it going to keep. My Wi Fi device is this one: RTL8723BE, using a custom driver that i reinstall after each Kernel update. I would like to solve this networking issue without installing the Gnome Desktop/Gnome Network manager cause it makes my system more "heavy" and i would like to only have KDE. Can you help me ? Known problem, see http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1002517 . AIUI, it's only the icon that's wrong, the Internet connection itself should not be affected. So just ignore that for now, it should be fixed with the next updates.

You can install NetworkManager-gnome without installing the GNOME desktop, and it should not make your system more "heavy" at all (whatever that means), it's just a small applet for the system tray (and works fine in KDE too, you just need to start "nm-applet" manually once, it is not autostarted in KDE). The necessary libraries should be installed already anyway, even on a KDE installation. There's also the text interface "nmtui" which is included in NetworkManager itself. But again, the issue should be solved with the next update, and is only cosmetical AFAIK. Thanks for the reply, but in my case it isn't only the Wi Fi icon the one that is wrong, but the whole connection setting cause i can't connect to internet. I have noticed now that the Clock doesnt appears anymore, also by clicking the white space where the clock should be, the calendar appear, but it is not right displayed. On the top left, appears "Monday" and a minus five " - 5 " as the date. Sunday appears as an one " 1 ", meaning October first, but the title of the month appears as " , 0 ", the last week at the bottom in the calendar, appears as Monday " 30 " and in the Sunday cell it appears " 36 ". Should it be a new bug open ? Modify the one you mentioned ? You need to set your timezone as KDE's Calender apparently isn't smart enough to go by just the UTC hardware clock time yet, and there was an issue in one or more of the TW snapshots with the timezone being set up during install: # cd /etc # rm localtime Next, for finding zone file, it's in this format: /usr/share/zoneinfo/dirname/zonefile |# ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Africa/Asmara (set yours to what it's supposed to be) Make sure you stay in the /etc/ directory as that is where you are symlinking to. | check with: # date or #timedatectl You can also try with systemd: #timedatectl list-timezones (timedatectl set-timezone/Zone///SubZone) Example:/ # timedatectl set-timezone Canada/Mountain -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Ok, I merely judged from the bug reports which seem to imply that only the wrong icon is displayed. But the actual problem is that plasma-nm cannot get the state correctly from NetworkManager (that's what's causing it to display the wrong icon), and this is what the update fixes. So it should still help. Btw, it has been released today, so just update your system and see if it works then. (As already suggested, use nmtui or nm-applet to connect if necessary)

Hm, never seen anything like that. The "missing" clock may be caused by a wrong color or font. Have a look in its settings and try a different font, and/or try to switch to a different desktop theme. The negative numbers in the calendar look like a (upstream) bug. But that's not a general problem either, as it works fine here and I also never heard of such a problem before. Maybe it is related to the timezone as sdm suggested, or maybe the locale settings. Right-click on the clock and choose "Set Time Format", what are your settings for "Region" and "Time"?
Should it be a new bug open ? Modify the one you mentioned ?
Well, for the NetworkManager problem, please try the update first. The clock/calendar problems are something completely different of course, and it's pointless to mention them in that bug report. ;-) If you want to report it, file a new one at http://bugs.kde.org/. But it's probably a good idea to try the suggestions and investigate a bit first, to maybe even find out what actually causes this. FYI, I did a fresh Tumbleweed installation in VirtualBox today (for different reasons), and I did have the same clock/calendar problem. So it does seem to be a general issue in Tumbleweed currently, on a new installation at least. Changing the time zone in KDE's "Date and Time" settings (you can find them in "Configure Desktop"->Locale, or just right-click on the clock) fixed it, it was indeed set to UTC even though I chose something else in the installer. I will investigate further... But at least the wrong time zone setting on a fresh installation seems to be a bug in YaST/the installer I suppose. Likely this: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=846909 (it's an old bug against 13.1beta, but there are two new comments from yesterday about current Tumbleweed) If the /etc/timezone symlink is broken, I wouldn't really expect Plasma/the clock/calendar to handle that correctly. (I don't remember seeing that problem when I booted the latest Krypton LiveCD last week though, maybe Plasma 5.8 does handle this better, but I haven't checked the time zone settings back then so I don't know whether that problem existed already) Kind Regards, Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
