[opensuse-kde] Slow KDE 4.6.1 response for some application
Hi all, I switched my system (oS 11.4 - kernel 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop - x86_64) to KDE 4.6.1 using repositories KDE:Release:46 and KDE:Extra:K_R_46_oS11.4. I have noted that when I click on the Skype icon in the system tray (skype 2.1.0.81), I obtain immediatly the window that should contain all contacts, but I need to wait about 5 seconds before viewing the actual content of the window. If I close such window and then I open it again, the content is displayed immediatly. This behaviour may be caused by the fact that Skype is proprietary and not KDE-native, but with KDE 4.6.0 I had not such behaviour. Moreover, the same thing happens when I press Ctrl-Alt-Del in order to shutdown the system. Also in this case I need to wait about 5 seconds before I am propted with the action to perform (logout/shutdown/reboot). Any idea about the causes of these delays? How can I collect information in order to file a bugreport in bnc? Most common causes for UI slowness is the combination of oxygen animations and/or kwin effects with bad gfx drivers. See here how to turn the stuff off, and see if it helps: http://mschlander.wordpress.com/2011/01/23/kde-is-slow-for-dummies/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I have tried to create a new user and disable all possible effects (in Configure Desktop/Personal Settings and oxygen-settings) as well as desktop search, but the behavior of the "Logout/Shutdown/Reboot" popup does not change. Using System Activity, I have found that when I open contact list of skype the first time, it saturates one of my cpus until the window is filled with the contact list; similarly, the "Logout/Shutdown/Reboot" popup induces ksmserver to use from 50% to 80% of one cpu, as well as the contact list of kopete. My system is an Acer Aspire 1810tz with 4Gb ram, processor Intel SU4100 and graphic card Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) identified as GM45 by X.org. Hi all,
Is there any way to discover why applications are so slow in my system?
For instance also kcharselect, that I can measure easily, is very slow:
/usr/bin/time kcharselect
19.70user 0.11system 0:21.15elapsed 93%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata
413552maxresident)k
17936inputs+88outputs (45major+27157minor)pagefaults 0swaps
The time is very close to the actual one, since I used Alt-F4 to
terminate kcharselect, obtaining the popup about "The window is not
responding..." that is disappeared together with kcharselect once it
was active.
If I use strace -c kcharselect, I obtain:
% time seconds usecs/call calls errors syscall
------ ----------- ----------- --------- --------- ----------------
68.40 0.004058 3 1162 589 read
10.20 0.000605 7 85 munmap

0.34 0.000020 0 491 fstat
0.00 0.000000 0 16 write
and then other syscalls with time 0.

Andrea
