[opensuse-kde] This time I give up on KDE 4 Desktop
********* Rant - but it's the last one ******************* I've tried, really, to use this "thing", but no, definitely, it's not possible. I'm sure the foundation of KDE 4 is a step forward (don't ask me why, I'm just ready to believe, but I have not seen where there is an improvement I am using, I'm probably just dumb), but what's killing all that work is the desktop. The panel is awkward to say the least, organising icons to launch programs is possible, but so cumbersome compared to KDE 3. the whole thing is sloooow (probably eating CPU power for useless eye candy). Apparently, the devs have *decided* that the *only* way to use a desktop is by having some sort of automount. Every time you insert a CD/DVD you get a menu poping from the panel (greetings from Windows Vista!), to mount it (yes, I added a line in fstab to mount it where I want) I have either to use this popup or Dolphin. I have been told Dolphin is better than Konqueror - I fail to see where. Anyway, to mount (or unmount) a DVD you have to use "Places" - as I hide this, it means more clicks to get it done. Now, you can have a "link to device" icon on your folder view, but it does not work (you can mount from the console, not from KDE). A bug has been filed six month ago...... If you create links to other partitions, they work... but they have names with the .desktop extention all over your desktop. Now, I could use a folder view for these, but a) I dont want them on my desktop all the time and b) it defeats the basic idea (mount these partitions only when I need them). I've reinstalled 11.1 this morning with KDE 3 - what a breeze, simple, efficient, and that's not only because I'm more used to it! GIVE US BACK A USABLE DESKTOP (and yes! I'm shouting in the hope someone can hear!). Do what you want under the hood if there is a good reason to rewrite everything from scrap, but really I get mad when I see that we are going to loose a good, matured desktop that did all we needed and will have to "adapt", "get used to" some inferior piece of desktop software. perhaps I could try to get used to Gnome Desktop - but their devs seem to be on the way to ruin that to. After Step maybe? I hope 11.1 can stay up to date enough because I'm not getting 11.2, unless KDE 4 Desktop changes, but it seems to be going the Windows way: changing, but for the worse, because the people who write it have decided that the users had to follow "their" way. OK, I had to let this out, perhaps I'm the only one to feel this way. Please tell us which version of KDE4 you have tried! There is a big improvement with 4.2.x(4) and I'm using already 4.3 Daniel

a rather worrying fact that i noticed with ALL releases of KDE so far: it's not really usable until the release reaches a minor version that is at least equal the major version... KDE1 was goot after 1.1 KDE2 took untiol 2.2 to be usable KDE3 was good after KDE 3.3, rock solid after 3.5 KDE4 will be rock solid when? 4.4.1? -- Die unaufgeforderte Zusendung einer Werbemail an Privatleute verstößt gegen §1 UWG und §823 I BGB (Beschluß des LG Berlin vom 2.8.1998 Az: 16 O 201/98). I believe your observation makes a lot of sense. My interpretation to that is that every generation brings in more features/bugs to be ruled out when using the infrastructure of the new major version. Lets face it, the need for a new major version is because a major change is imminent in the core functionality or behavior. I also think that another reason why it always takes even a longer time frame to stabilize is due to an increase in the userbase of that platform. Regarding the original poster of the thread, I don't see why he shouldn't keep on using KDE 3.5. Seems like he is not interested in new features but just in bug fixes. The choice is his, and not that of the linux distributor. With the same argument I used to still use Firefox 1.5 during the Firefox 2.0 release. I believe that the option of repositories for KDE3 is adequate enough to keep him going for many more cycles. On Thu, Jul 16, 2009 at 11:58 AM, Mathias Homann<admin@eregion.de> wrote:

This was an attempt to solve the raised issue where many people complained that it was too easy to reorganize your panel accidentally with KDE 3.
the whole thing is sloooow (probably eating CPU power for useless eye candy).
It could be made faster, and some of the slowness depends on the individual graphics card being used. KDE 4 relies a lot more on good hardware acceleration of graphics than any version before.

What do you want to use? how do you want to mount?
I have been told Dolphin is better than Konqueror - I fail to see where. Anyway, to mount (or unmount) a DVD you have to use "Places" - as I hide this, it means more clicks to get it done.
you can also use the device notifier popup in the panel to unmount

? could you explain what you did here in a little bit more detail, please? Greetings, Dirk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
