[opensuse-kde] Request for a more tunable kde
Hi all, I wonder if kde on openSuSE could be more tunable or if there could be a netbook/smartbook setting without nepomuk and other programs in /usr/share/autostart or that a user can select himself what should be started up automatically. I don't use nepomuk at all, and it has a negative effect on the performance of my system I would like to disable it permanently. If now i now remove the link from /usr/share/autostart it will be there again after a zypper dup and maybe an update. I think if this option doesn't exist, kde won't be usable on an ARM device. As you see it's all there. :) And if I'm not wrong smartphones use ARM and they do use full indexing, i.e. semantic search etc. as nepomuk tries to. Sothe concept of nepomuk is used on ARM and in fact is promoted as a feature. And Nepomuk as of KDE 4.7 no longer loads down your CPU/system like it used to (I tested it on low end Atom CPUs and noticed essentially zero perfomance impact with it running)... so disabling it actually kills off some core features/functionality of KDE4. Don't say it doesn't impact ... It depend of how much data you index, (normally you would like to have all your data right?) imap account you have, and how much data (in the indexing range) is moving (new, delete, modify) etc ... -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

I compare how it was before to how it is now. In earlier releases Nepomuk in its default configuration would completely kill system performance on my computers (including a dual core 3.6GHz machine with 8GB ram). Letting it run on my Atom based netbook only served to convert the netbook into a space heater... you couldn't actually use the netbook if Nepomuk was indexing. One of the most annoying "features" for me was Nepomuk's insistence on re-indexing EVERYTHING on a reboot. Now though... same hardware, same machines, both running KDE 4.7.3, and I don't see any real performance impact at all anymore (clean installs with full indexing going on). Nepomuk doesn't re-index on a reboot - they built in some intelligence there finally - and even when indexing, while there is of course some system load, it appears that it scales way back or does less (I never actually investigated since it didn't bother me anymore) if you are using the machine during an index cycle.... or maybe it indexed when fully idle... I don't know for sure... What I can say is that in *my* experience Nepomuk is well behaved now... blindly ripping it out (something I used to do as well) of the latest release is an action based on previous release experiences, not a decision based on its current performance... I'm trying to say, give it a chance now. The devs have done a LOT of work on trying to get it right, including some sensible default settings, and frankly they've got it right for most situations. I didn't attempt to remove it, or ask for that. I'm in a long run after my Semantic Desktop from almost 3 years now. I just need it, so happy when things start to be fixed. and yeap 4.7.2 & .3 offer that again -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
