[opensuse-kde] KDE4.6.2 (on 11.4) Kmenu names not showing

I've been poking at this one for a little while now without much success. Using openSUSE 11.4 and KDE 4.6.2. I've got a few applications - the games from HumbleBundle 2 - that have been added to the KMenu by their installers. When I navigate to the applications in the KMenu, the icons are showing, but there is no text next to the icons (Application name field is empty). A mouse hover shows the app names in grey text in the Description field. If I go to the KMenu editor and check the entries, they are filled in correctly - there is a name in the Name field, and the Description fields are all blank. If I add text to the Description field, save and exit the editor, the new Descriptions I've added are not shown on mouse hover, and the Application name is still not showing. Hi, KDE 4.7's plasma is now centered around activities - breaking once more the way many of us work with KDE. Many on IRC voiced the oppinion that the activity manager shouldn't be part of the default plasma - including me. But this would be a major divergence with upstream's default, so I would like to discuss more widely first. What's your oppinion? Do you prefer virtual desktops or plasma activities? [opensuse-kde] Easy image mounting?

One thing that was nice in OS X was the ease of mounting an image as a virtual disk. I rarely had use for this however until I got a netbook, which has no optical drive. Now when I have hoped to install certain games (running on WINE) this is unnecessarilly complicated, if not impossible due to the lack of optical drive and the lack of an easy mounting option. Can we be sure to add an easy way to mount disk images? Maybe just right click>mount image in Dolphin? I don't imagine it should be very hard to implement, and would be very useful... especially as more users are turning to netbooks and similar devices. [opensuse-kde] Huge Drop In Responsiveness In 12.1 RC1

Has anybody else noticed a huge drop in desktop responsiveness under 12.1RC1 as opposed to Beta1? When I finally managed to install 12.1 Beta 1 (had to use text mode to install due to an X11 segfault during the second phase), the system was quick and responsive; incredibly responsive in fact - I was impressed. Now in RC1, using the KDE desktop feels like wading through sand. I'm not sure what's causing it, but the graphical effects are extremely choppy (Radeon HD 5670 in my test machine), with what can only be described as a "low framerate" during actions such as maximising and minimising windows. Interestingly, I had the same experience with 11.4 - it was very fast right up until the release candidate stage and then something changed which slowed everything right down. The machine I work on every day runs 11.4 (with an Nvidia Geforce GT440) and is manageable, but KWin eventually (after perhaps a week or more) automatically disables desktop effects as they become too slow to use. I'd be content to blame the graphics drivers, but this has happened with cards by both Nvidia and AMD/ATI, with and without proprietary drivers. Can anybody explain what might have happened? Surely there shouldn't be such a radical difference in performance between a Beta and a Release Candidate? [opensuse-kde] Multiple DM instances at boot

Dear All, I have the following scenario: I am using KDE and my wife is using Gnome. As a DM we use KDM. Now, from KDE I can switch user to Gnome, but not the other way around, as Gnome wants GDM, which I don't want to use (I prefer KDM). I am experimenting with a program called kdm-gdmcompatibility http://opensource.fsmi.uni-karlsruhe.de/projects/kdm-gdmcompat/ , but it seems not to be working with Gnome 3.2. So, I would like to be able to do the following: - either run a KDM instance on v7 and a GDM one on vt8 at boot, so I can use one to log into KDE and the other to log into Gnome. - or, it this is not possible, to run two KDM instances on vt7 and vt8 , and switch between them using CTRL+ALT. Can anyone tell me please if it is possible to achieve any of these options and how (I guess this should be put into an X configuration file)? [opensuse-kde] kde wallet integration in firefox

I am using firefox 7.0.1 and openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.7.00. Here is my question. When I open up firefox, it does not usually open up the kde wallet manager until I navigate away from my home page. It is not necessarily indicated by something on the page I go to, as it will open up the wallet manager when I go to a google search. There are some websites that I would like for the wallet manager to store field and password information for, but for some reason firefox does not ask if I want to remember the password on that page. I know that firefox is using kdewallet to store passwords, but I don't know why it works for some pages and not for others. Naturally I do not want to give out in a public forum like this which websites I am using, so I hope that doesn't make troubleshooting difficult. But nevertheless, I am wondering if there others have this problem and what you do about it. I did open up the exceptions window in firefox preferences and the websites I am having a problem with are not listed, so there is no reason that I can see as to why they should not work. [opensuse-kde] Bluetooth infrastructure broken in 12.1, possible fix from upstream.

All is explained in Novell Bugzilla Bug 725962: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=725962 but I will make a summary: Bluetooth infrastructure is broken for many people in OpenSUSE 12.1 RC1, some people are having kded or plasma crashes, and other haven't crashes, but Bluetooth is neither working properly. I think a working Bluetooth is important nowadays, due to the big amount of mobile devices and wireless bluetooth-based devices like earphones... The problems seems to be curiously in networkmanager applet according to upstream, it causes a crash due to a pointer which is not tested before using it (as explained in the commit). [opensuse-kde] configure find / search field to be open on kwrite startup?

Hello all, I'd like to configure kwrite and konqueror such that the "Find / Search field" (the field that opens when you press ctrl+f, or use the edit->find menu) always opens on program start. I use this feature constantly and am willing to give up a few pixels of window height to have it always available. I've searched online and looked at the kwrite config file and handbook but had no luck. I also checked the command line options for kwrite but did not find what I am looking for. [opensuse-kde] Dup report to 12.1 – Nepomuk fix worth backporting

Hey everybody! Was the branch update already done or will KDE 4.7.3 be included in 12.1 anyway? If so there could be another fix worth backporting: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=263730 It can cause your home partition to get filled-up and thus lead to funny behaviour including data-loss. "Only eating RAM" would be http://trueg.wordpress.com/2011/10/24/memory-leaks- in-nepomuk-nah/ but unfortunately he does not point to any commit to backport. I dupped my 11.4 + KDF yesterday to 12.1 (from factory repos) + KDF and relating KDE there was no issue. So a "good job" from me to everybody involved. The only thing I thought was a bug was that kded continously asked for access to kwallet. Yet that was no bug but pnm importing all my connections and asking for access to kwallet for each of them. So for people using "allow only once" this might look strange but will go away. :) Oh – and I had to remove a lot of packages manually because they do not exist anymore in opensuse, including kdeaccessibility4 which was left over in version 4.6.95. So at some point in KDF there was a package name change which did not remove the old package. Having a look at my package list I see kdeaccessibility3 available from oss, kdeaccessibility4-debugsource (4.7.2) from debug and KDF and kaccessible (4.7.2) from KDF and oss. So kaccessible probably lacks the hint that it replaces kaccessibility4 and the debugsource package should have the same package name as kaccessible should it not? [opensuse-kde] python-qt4 fails to build for SLE_11_SP1 when I add "BuildRequires: phonon-devel" to the spec file

In order to run OpenLP I had to rebuild python-qt4 with phonon-devel installed. I figured out how to do this on OBS by adding "BuildRequires: phonon-devel" to the spec file. I submitted a bug report to try to get this added to the packaged shipped in 12.1. The developer who is handling my bug gave me instructions on how to branch the package and submit my packages back through OBS. I've made the change and it build for 11.3, 11.4 and Factory but it fails for SLE_11_SP1. I'm assuming that I shouldn't submit a change that causes this breakage. I can't figure out what the problem is. I don't know if there is some other dependency I need to add to the spec file or if there is an error in the source code somewhere. I have been trying to get kdenetwork to detect libgadu for gadu protocol support without success. libgadu is available, and it is in the buildrequires. Here is the cmake message: -- checking for module 'libgadu' -- found libgadu, version 1.11.0 -- Found LIBGADU: /usr/lib64/libgadu.so grep: /usr/local/include/libgadu.h: No such file or directory -- libgadu must be compiled with pthreads support Note that libgadu IS being built with pthreads support enabled. Also note that cmake appears to be searching /usr/local/include/. Include files are not installed there, they are installed in /usr/include/, and kdenetwork is told to search in /usr/include, it searches in /usr/include for every other package it needs, and libgadu.pc says to look in /usr/include. I looked at the cmakelists.txt files and couldn't find anything obviously wrong. I would like to decide myself what I spare my battery for and akondi running in the background kind of kills my shutting down kmail ;( And yes, I have a unreasonable short polling interval for when I run kmail. I hope I remembered correctly: * add folderview to default activity * leave activity manager * have default plasma theme * have 2 virtual desktops - and with it a page Note that the firefox task is a starter if you don't have any firefox open. I also fixed the plastique bug and the "kdesu konsole" problem and I'll now head towards the "pnm on workstations" problem. Will and Raymond check kpackagekit, what's left to fix for RC1? Hello all, As the suggestion of Ismail, I am writing to the KDE OpenSuSE list with some of my concerns about KDE in the upcoming 12.1 release. I have been testing and filing bug reports against openSuSE since 10.0 or 10.1 (I think) in the hope of improving the Operating System I use in my everyday work. Unfortunately, I have begun to feel a little overwhelmed lately, so I am writing this appeal in the hope that it will be taken seriously. At the time of writing, openSuSE 12.1 is at Beta1 release, and I have just completed my first testing pass (after encountering a bug that prevented completion of installation, this has taken longer than expected). As usual for a beta release, there are issues, but this time I am worried that, when combined, they may make the KDE Desktop unusable. As it stands, it is presently not possible for users to: 1) Eject optical discs through KDE: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=659153 2) Apply any updates through the provided KDE updater: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=700526 3) Rename any icons on their desktop: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722861 Additionally, the following strange behaviours prevent or impede normal operation of KDE: 1) Certain launchers are continually re-created in the Taskbar: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722859 2) Kmix continually uses 100% of one CPU core: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=720746 3) Konqueror is unable to use Adobe Flash by default: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=661901 4) Kaffeine is unable to open files located on network shares: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691487 Finally, a number of cosmetic issues may confuse non-technical users. 1) KNetworkManager is always displayed in the system tray, whether wanted or not. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=671571 2) The Office icon is not displayed (a question mark is shown instead) https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722860 Note that other icons are missing too for some reason. Notably, a number of these bugs were present in the 11.4 release as well and have not been fixed in all the time since release, but now the additional bugs in 12.1 have made the situation worse. At this point, I am desperate for a stable, functional openSuSE release, and I do not feel that I can continue to work around the issues I am encountering. I have several hundred users whose desktops/laptops are running openSuSE and I am already stretched trying to keep up with the required maintenance/workarounds! If 12.1 isn't substantially more stable, I'll *have* to either switch distros or abandon desktop Linux entirely out of pure necessity! Hi all, I have just noticed that rpm package libQtWebKit4 in the K:R:47 has changed version number: from 4.7.4-226.1 to 2.1.90-2.1. In the meanwhile, the provided library has changed from libQtWebKit.so.4.7.4 to libQtWebKit.so.4.9.0. Is this OK? And is it safe to force the update from libQtWebKit4-4.7.4-226.1 to libQtWebKit4-2.1.90-2.1? Qt 4.7.4 introduces a change to the handling of QTextBlock::userState that makes it unusable for the purposes of tracking which block represents a marker or remember line. Previous versions of Qt also changed or otherwise corrupted the userState value causing the loss of synchronization with the data held in the IRCView itself. Blocks are now tracked via the userData field, which was unmolested in the change made to QTextDocument. Warning: this commit introduces a large volume of debugging output. Dear all, for a couple of days now, all "libqt4-*" packages that were previously included in the KDE46 (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.4/) and KDE47 (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/47/openSUSE_11.4/) repos are now missing. Have the Qt packages been split to different repos? On the OpenSuSE page about KDE repositories (http://en.opensuse.org/KDE_repositories#Qt) it says about the Qt repos: "Qt - Warning: You do not need to add these if you are using the KDE repositories listed above. Hi, Looking at the spec file of kdelibs KDE is built with enchant support next to aspell, but I cannot find an option to choose enchant. When I remove the aspell dictionaries I have no spelling check in for example konqueror or kwrite. I would like to use the same spellchecker as in libreoffice or firefox or thunderbird (and enchant defaults to hunspell). Searching for an answer I found FATE 305688 (system wide spellchecker (hunspell)). I think KDE is the last big user of aspell. Is it not an idea to follow the trend and make hunspell the default (or even the only possibility) for spellchecking? It is easier for users to have one library for spellchecking.
