[opensuse-kde3] openSUSE 12.1 with KDE3 and KDE4 applications
Hi! I am about to install openSUSE 12.1 on a laptop. I want to use it mainly (or entirely) with the KDE3 desktop but I still want to be able to run KDE4 applications under KDE3. In the past, I have done this with openSUSE 11.3 and 11.4. During installation of 11.3 and 11.4, I selected KDE4 as the default desktop. Then I added the KDE:KDE3 repository and installed all the packages to properly run KDE3 following more or less the recommendations given here: HOW-TO: KDE 3.5 on 11.4 This has worked perfectly and I was even able to use the oxygen theme in KDE3. For example, okular and vlc came with the nice oxygen theme even when running under KDE3. My question is: Is this procedure going to work also with openSUSE 12.1 or is there anything in particular I have to pay attention to? Thanks! Here is what I do each time : * install with LXDE, XFCE or whatever, but NOT KDE4 * add KDE3 repositories and kde3 rpms * edit files : /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager : DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm3" /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager : DEFAULT_WM="startkde3" * logout, chose kde3 desktop at password prompt programs look-and-feel are kde3 or kde4, it depends... For example, I have just checked : * vlc is kde4 * kwrite is kde3. Most are kde3, hopefully :) Dsant -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org
Hi Dsant, This is a possibility. With your setup, do you automatically get the oxygen theme or do your have to install it manually? I also like to have programs that you find only on KDE4 like okular. So far I haven't had any problems installing KDE4 first (but never actually logging into KDE4) and then the KDE3 packages. Gianluca, I have both Oxygen and Crystal (which I use) themes availables (in OpenSuse 12.1). Just go in kcontrol (no systemsettings :) ), "appearance", "icon" as on this screenshot : http://postimage.org/image/9vi2hdogv/ To answer your question about having kde4 programs too, I have kpdf (crystal icons, but you choose), AND okular (oxygen icons, no choice) at the same time : http://postimage.org/image/xb4l0gxlr/ Dsant On Friday 13 July 2012 11:44:01 pm Gianluca Interlandi wrote:

Hi! I'm not sure whether this question has already been posted. I cannot find the KDE3 repositories for openSUSE 11.3. I looked at: http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/ which contains all repositories from openSUSE_11.1 onward except for 11.3. I'm aware that this distribution is no longer officially supported. Is there a place where I can find the KDE3 repositories for openSUSE_11.3? I would be happy if I could have access to them at least temporarily. Thanks! If the openSUSE 11.3 KDE3 repositories are no longer available, does it make sense to simply copy all files in /opt/kde3/ from another openSUSE 11.3 installation? Are they any other things that I would need to consider? Thanks! Gianluca On Fri, 1 May 2015, Gianluca Interlandi wrote:

You can better install packages from another distro, for instance the prevuous one. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+owner@opensuse.org

You absolutely can do this. I have opensuse 12.1 running kde4 and I'm running my favourite KDE3 programs, including kdepim3 and konqueror. I do the following: Install 12.1 KDE4. Do all the online updates. Do all the multimedia updates. Install the KDE3 repo. Add the KDE3 desktop via the one-click install. Temporarily set the laptop to boot KDE3 by changing the lines in display manager and window manager by editing the /etc/sysconfig file in Yast. Boot into KDE3 and set all the KDE preferences - including, for example web browser. Make sure the KDE3 programs are there in the start menus. I put them in favourites, too. Reset the display and window manager back to KDE4. Reboot. Now my laptop has all the latest Opensuse 12.1 Updates, and the KDE3 programs I want. I can also install either KDE3 or KDE4 programs and run them just fine. Bob, Why do you need to switch the display manager at all? Why not just leave the display manager alone and launch your KDE3 session from the kde4 display manager? The only time you need to change your display manager in yast is to permanently switch DMs. You can launch any desktop or window manager from kdm4 (blackbox, e16, e17, fluxbox, fvwm2, icewm, kde3, kde4, openbox, pekwm, sawfish, trinity, windowmaker, xfce, etc...) -- David C. Yes, this is what I usualy do. I launch KDE3 from the kde4 display manager. However, using YAST I set KDE3 as the default window manager in /etc/sysconfig. This is to make sure that if I ever lauch X11 from a console using startx I get into KDE3. Thanks, Gianluca
