I only use x86. Just unable to get KControl.desktop and icons.desktop to work in 11.4. 11.3 and 11.2 never a problem, genned new prod'n 11.3/3,5 a few weeks ago that I'm using now to write this. Just downloaded and installed the 11.4 final x86_64 DVD, using the two-step
process I outlined previously. KControl.desktop and icons.desktop return the
same results, i.e., the former comes up with a blank left side (categories),
and the latter abends via kcmshell.kcrash with the following Trace info:

Several hour to several days. Anyway I did not make any fixes, this is just a technical rebuild. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

I run 11.3/3.5 99% of the time every day in my x86 production PC, and everything works. I'm writing this on that system now. I went into the x86 11.4/3.5 partition and added the /KDE3/../11.3 repository, then upgraded kdebase3 (just itself) from 3.5.10.1-123.1 to 123.2. No change in KControl or icons.desktop behaviour, with or without loging out/in. Next step, upgraded kdebase3-apps, kdm, ksysguardd, nsplugin, runtime, session and workplace all at once to 123.2 (also from 123.1). Logout/in ... no change in behaviour. Note: kdebase3-SuSE-branding-openSUSE was at 11.3.6.1 and upgraded to 11.2-6.4 OK, but kdebase3-SuSE (same versions) threw up an error when upgrade selected, "nothing provided libhd.so.17 needed by kdebase3-SuSE-11.2-6.4.i586", so I left it at 11.3.6.1. BTW, my 11.3/3.5 "production" PC has libhd.so.17 (symlinked to libhd.so.17.3) in /usr/lib. Just for the heck of it, I copied the symlink and 17.3 to the 11.4 install, and booted there; had to force Yast to update kdebase3-SuSE to 11.2-6.4. No difference afterwards. So, no, using the 11.3 KDE3 repository in 11.4 x86 provides no relief to the Kcontrol and icons.desktop problem. Same blank left column, and icons.desktop throwing up the KDE Crash Handler. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

Thank you for the experiment. We have to locate the package that causes the error. Seems it is outside of KDE3. Thus we have to report a bug against that package or build the older version separately in KDE3 repository. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

Do you use an SVG icon theme (Oxygen)? If you use an SVG-based theme, try to manually change the icon theme through the config files to a raster-based theme (for example, KDE Classic). Then try to run the icon kcontrol module again. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

Point of comparison: in my 11.3/3/5 Production system, the icon theme in use is Crystal SUSE (not Crystal SVG); I think these (below) are the controlling config files, both with value "<icons name="crystalsuse">": ~/.kde/share/apps/kstyle/themes/original/original.xml ~/.kde/share/apps/kthememanager/themes/original/original.xml The 11.4/3.5 installs, both x86 & x86_64, only have: ~/.kde/share/apps/kthememanager/themes/original/original.xml The other file does not exist. Both install have the same values in that config file, assuming that is the place to look. A quick boot into those partitions reveals that neither "oxygen" nor "sonar" icons/themes are installed. No "oxygen" on my production 11.3/3.5 either. Ilya, should I be looking someplace else for the config files? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

If you want to configure you icon size, etc.. while waiting on kcontrol to be fixed, you can use the following ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals as a reference. Just exit kde then edit your ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals and add the following sections: [DesktopIcons] [Icons] [MainToolbarIcons] [PanelIcons] [SmallIcons] [ToolbarIcons] From the other thread, I think it is either a missing config file or missing entries in an existing config causing a parse error and the kcrash. I'm not very good at debugging this kind of thing, but at least I've got the icon size and theme changed and I can access the icon module now. -- David C.
