[opensuse-kde3] octet-stream - file association funniness?
All, Even though 15.0 is end-of-life, I have continued to update from the KDE3 repo when rebuilds are triggered. Lately (last 2 weeks), kdebase, kdelib, etc.. were updated and I noticed some strangeness with the kcontrol-> File Associations. Specifically, I had a x-kdeuser3 pop up that broke kpdf. (deleting the association fixed the problem). Then I had the octet-stream association disappear?? The x-kdeuserX are custom associations that are created with users create a custom association. That's the way it is supposed to work. I have no explanation for how the latest x-kdeuser3 association was generated. (the x-kdeuser1 and x-kdeuser2 are associations I created years ago for Archlinux package-build files and for assembly files -- *.s *.S) But there is no explanation where it came from. The octet-stream issue, is a well known and old side-effect of doing something that causes it to be deleted causing nearly all url file:// open handling to break. However, this time, the octet-stream was still there, but was suppressed or overwritten by the odd x-kdeuser3 file. (there are some old posts that show populating the octect-stream with various *.bin, *.exe, .... Filename Patterns -- but don't, just leave it empty. After emptying mine all is well. I don't know if this is a side effect of some bug fix for 15.1 or Tumbleweed, just be aware if you see problems where applications no longer recognize their proper extension or association, check for a stray applications/x-kdeuserX or a corrupt or populated applications/octet-stream -- David C.
