[opensuse-kde3] 4/24 Update Broke All kicker Apps - but which update did it?
Guys, Updates have been rock-solid for 11.4 kde3. Yesterday, I updated and kmenu is gone, kpager is gone, all systray apps are gone and the tasklist is gone. Screenshots: [144k showing full screen & empty kicker -- quicklaunch is only working app]: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/kde3/kicker-apps-gone-%3eno-Kmen... [73k the error dialog] http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/kde3/kicker-apps-gone-%3eno-Kmen... Here is the .xsession-errors file: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/kde3/xsession-errors-no-kmenu.tx... Here is the list of packages that were updated on 4/24: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/kde3/upgraded-apps-causing-kmenu... I have no idea which update did it. I suspect a kdebase3 file. The only other strange conflict that was resolved was SoQt (which has something to do with coin and OpenGL). I don't know if that is related, but there was a conflict that yast resolved. Let me know what other files I can post that would help. Right now, other than having no kmenu and kicker being blank (except for quicklaunch) things seem to be working normally. Err.. I knew you would ask... I can't recall what I chose in yast, but I did dump the y2log SoQt information for you. I have it here [44k]: http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/suse/bugs/114/kde3/y2log-SoQt.txt I fixed my kde3 install by downgrading all rpm that were upgraded on 4/24. I know the downgrade didn't solve which package caused the problem, but I had stuff I needed to get done today. Let me know what you want me to try to help isolate the problem and I'm happy to give it a go. I can always drop back to a working config with the packages I have in /home/david/suse/goodK3/{noarch,x86_64}. What do you think we should try next? You won't need systemsettings-kde3 any more as kcontrol now works well with the fixed suse-desktop-data package. Anyway I have just excluded the file kde-settings-power.directory from systemsettings-kde3. I recommend you to remove systemsettings-kde3 package and reinstall kdebase3. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

Ilya, Here is the conflict with SoQt and kdebase3-SuSE by I'm getting: #### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2011-04-25 17:39:27 #### libSoQt20-1.5.0-1.pm.5.1.x86_64 obsoletes SoQt < 1.5.0 provided by SoQt-1.4.1-2.6.x86_64 [ ] Following actions will be done: do not install libSoQt20-1.5.0-1.pm.5.1.x86_64 do not install SoQt-devel-1.5.0-1.pm.5.1.x86_64 [ ] do not install SoQt-1.4.1-2.6.x86_64 I chose: [x] Following actions will be done: do not install libSoQt20-1.5.0-1.pm.5.1.x86_64 do not install SoQt-devel-1.5.0-1.pm.5.1.x86_64 kdebase3-SuSE-11.3-8.1.x86_64 requires desktop-data-openSUSE-fixed, but this requirement cannot be provided uninstallable providers: desktop-data-openSUSE-11.4-13.3.1.noarch[K3] [ ] downgrade of desktop-data-openSUSE-11.4-13.16.1.noarch to desktop-data-openSUSE-11.4-13.3.1.noarch [ ] do not install kdebase3-SuSE-11.3-8.1.x86_64 [ ] break kdebase3-SuSE by ignoring some of its dependencies I chose: [x] do not install kdebase3-SuSE-11.3-8.1.x86_64 -- David C. This is unrelated to your problem.
kdebase3-SuSE-11.3-8.1.x86_64 requires desktop-data-openSUSE-fixed, but this requirement cannot be provided uninstallable providers: desktop-data-openSUSE-11.4-13.3.1.noarch[K3] [ ] downgrade of desktop-data-openSUSE-11.4-13.16.1.noarch to desktop-data-openSUSE-11.4-13.3.1.noarch
You should choose this one. I included the fixed package desktop-data-openSUSE into KDE:KDE3 because it can take long for the patch to be accepted in 11.4 If you are confused with the word "downgrade" you can see that the versions of the packages are the same.

Your mistake. This package is essential for normal openSUSE desktop experience and includes menu data, file associations and other things. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

I did - I thought about it and changed it after I sent the post. I updated 143 packages and all is fine. Thanks :p -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde3+help@opensuse.org

Regardless whether this is related, it is good to be aware that doing an 'update' with the packman repository enabled will try and use the SoQt packages from packman instead of those in KDE:/KDE3. On the last update, I disabled the packman repo just to eliminate the conflict while I worked the kdebase3 issue. All is working well now with the latest updates applied. -- David C. Just to let everyone know that, as I previously advised, I did a new install of 11.4_x86/K3 for my production machine about 10 days ago. My normal method of install, but I did not select the systemsettings workaround module for the old Personal Settings (blank left side) when choosing from the KDE3 repo. Reason: Ilya had already fixed it in the KDE:/KDE3 repo. Everything worked, KDE3-wise, as well as I could determine. I have not tested out K3B yet, though. This past Sunday night I did a "Package > All Packages > Update if newer version available" update. I noted that it wanted to downgrade one package, which I accepted. All went well, and all seems to be working well. They only material issue I have seen, pre and post update, is Firefox4 was a bit flaky, rendering-wise. So I downgraded to 3.6.16 and it's better. This was before the FF4 Final patch came out. I'm still with 3.6.16. Also, in both FF3 and FF$, downloading embedded .pdf's links into the browser window is hit and miss; I have to hit refresh a few times for it to "take". Using Acroreader only (with its plugins, I guess). I have an Asrock A785GM-LE/128M board, Phenom II X2-550, 4 gigs DDR2, ATI4770 Samsung 213T. I've run both FF4 and 3.6.16. FF4 renders fine on my laptop -- although I cannot see any benefit in the upgrade. (I don't open 50 tabs at once)

I have just used the native KPDF. Rather than viewing .pdfs in the browser, I just save to tmp and use kpdf. No issues there :p Glad to know kde3 is working well for you. It has been rock solid after the kcontrol fix. Only remaining issues I have is sftp://host:port/path/file not working in konqueror. I have been using fish instead. -- David C.
