All, I enjoyed compiz immensely when in came out in the (10.3?) days. I found old compiz 6 rpms. I liked the extent to which you could tailor the desktop switch, scale windows, etc. to just how you wanted. I liked the emerald themes, to the extent I even created a dozen or so. I have not used compiz since 11.0 days in any serious manner. But I noticed compiz 8.8 and fusion-icon in the KDE repo and thought I would give it a try. It worked! Fairly well. Gone are desktop-cylinder and desktop-sphere. Gone are photo-wheel, ring-switcher, shift-switch, and wobbly windows no longer has a minimize effect option. But the cube works fine. I did have it run away and take a 55% of the CPU once while messing with setting while it was running... We will see if that continues. There were a few artifacts left on occasion and the decidedly GTK3 color dialog will not let you select many custom colors (it jumps with a large step from e.g. greens to light-blue to blue without letting you stop in between) The following were the packages the install pulled in: compiz-0.8.8-8.1.x86_64 compiz-branding-openSUSE-0.8.8-8.1.x86_64 compiz-emerald-0.8.12.4-1.4.x86_64 compiz-emerald-lang-0.8.12.4-1.4.noarch compiz-emerald-theme-manager-0.8.12.4-1.4.x86_64 compiz-emerald-themes-0.8.12.1-1.1.noarch compiz-kde3-0.8.8-8.1.x86_64 compizconfig-settings-manager-0.8.12.4-1.1.noarch compizconfig-settings-manager-lang-0.8.12.4-1.1.noarch fusion-icon-0.1-4.1.noarch fusion-icon-qt3-0.1-4.1.noarch libcompizconfig-0.8.12.1-1.2.x86_64 python-compizconfig-0.8.12.1-1.3.x86_64 All in all, it works well. I'm pretty sure the artifacts are due to the new screen ratios (e.g. 1600x900 instead of 1440x900). I have an nVidia card in the laptop. I'll work with it as time permits and see if I can get rid of some of the rough edges. I wish we had the remaining plugins for KDE3 that made it what it was. Right now, it looks like the additional plugs are only available in OSS for, I suspect KDE4. You cannot install the oss packages without conflicting with the base compiz page from the KDE3 repo, e.g. compiz-plugins-main-lang-0.8.12.2-1.18.noarch.rpm compiz-plugins-extra-0.8.12.1-1.25.x86_64.rpm compiz-plugins-experimental-0.8.12-1.22.x86_64.rpm Is there any way that those additional plugins could be included for KDE3? -- David C.
